occurs.
DISEASE
• is a particular abnormal condition
that negatively affects the structure
or function of all or part of an
organism.
• Diseases are often known to be
medical conditions that are
associated with specific signs and
symptoms.
Types of Diseases
Communicable Diseases
Nakahahawang sakit
• Caused by pathogens (harmful
microorganisms). They can transfer
from one host to another.

Non-Communicable Diseases
Di - Nakahahawang sakit
• Caused by unhealthy lifestyle,
stress, vices and/or hereditary
factors

Prevention and Control of
Diseases and Disorder

Non-Communicable
Diseases
Learning Objectives
• Explains the non-communicable
diseases based on cause and effect,
signs and symptoms, risk factors
and protective factors possible
complication
• Corrects myth and fallacies about
non-communicable diseases
Allergy
• is synonymous to hypersensitivity, which
refers to an exaggerate response to an
antibody – forming substance or antigen.

• Cause: Food intake, vaccine or blood

transfusion, insect sting, skin contact,
or through nasal by smell.
• Prevention – Avoid your allergens, Take
your medicine as prescribed, Know what
to do during the allergic reaction.
Allergens – causes of allergy

Foods

Dust, particles,
pollens, animal fur
Types of Allergy
Affected Body
Allergy Allergen Symptoms
Part/s
Sneezing, runny nose,
Dust, particles, pollens,
Allergic Rhinitis animal fur Nasal cavity stuffed nose, respiratory
problems

Allergic Dust, particles, pollens,

Eyes Eye irritation and redness
Conjunctivitis animal fur

Eczema or Atopic Anything touched that can Itching, inflammation,

Dermatitis cause allergic reaction Skin rashes, dryness

Food, drugs, fluid or

Hives chemical intake Skin Inflammation and swelling

Skin reaction, low/high

Allergic Shock Food, drugs, fluid or
(Anaphylactic shock) chemical intake Any body parts blood pressure, difficulty
breathing
Asthma
• is a chronic condition in which breathing
becomes difficult.

• Causes: Dust and molds, pollens, cold

air, weather change, sinus infections,
stress, and certain foods.

• Signs and Symptoms: Shortness of

breath, wheezing, coughing, chest
tightness.
• Prevention: Stay away from allergens, Prevent
colds, Take asthma medication as prescribed.
Cardiovascular Diseases
• is a disease of the heart and blood
vessels. This disease is the leading
cause of mortality in the Philippines.

• Can be caused by hereditary factors

and/or unhealthy lifestyle.

• Too much salts and sweets will make

blood thicker.

• Excess fats and high cholesterol can

obstruct blood vessels.

• Prevention: Regular exercise, healthy

diet, avoid tobacco smoking,
maintenance blood pressure
Cardiovascular Diseases
• Thicker blood and narrow/obstructed blood
vessels can lead to certain cardiovascular
diseases.

• Common signs and symptoms include chest

pain, difficulty breathing, irregular or high
pulse rate, high blood pressure.

• Warning signs:

Face drooping

Arm Weakness

Speech difficulty

Time to call
Common Cardiovascular Diseases
Cardiovascular
Definition/Causes
Disease

Coronary Heart Disease The arteries of the heart cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart.

Arrhythmia Irregular heartbeat – too fast, too slow, or irregular pattern

Blood pressure consistently exceeds the normal rate (110/70 mm/Hg). It can cause
Hypertension rupture of blood vessels, heart attack, or stroke.

Cause by lack or interrupted blood flow in the heart, causing its muscles to cease from
Heart Attack functioning.

Cause by lack or interrupted blood and oxygen supply in the brain. Brain cells can die
Stroke due to lack of blood and oxygen OR a rupture of blood vessels can also damage the brain
(Aneurism).
Cancer
• Caused by abnormal cells growing without
control.

• Also caused by heredity, injuries, chemical and

radiation exposure

• As these abnormal cells grow, they form in

masses called tumors.

• Some cells, enzymes, antibodies and genes

naturally kill abnormal cells, preventing growth of
tumors and cancerous cells. These natural
defenses are weakened due to aging, stress,
heredity, and unhealthy lifestyle.
Cancer
• Signs and Symptoms are change in bowel or
bladder habits, a sore that does not heal,
unusual bleeding or discharge, thickening or
lump in breast or elsewhere, indigestion or
difficulty in swallowing, obvious change in
wart or mole, nagging cough or hoarseness,
unexplained weight loss, persistent
hoarseness.

• Ways to treat cancer through radiation

therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
Types of Tumors
Benign Tumors
• masses of cells that are not cancerous and do
not spread

Malignant Tumors
• masses of cells that are cancerous. They may
spread to other parts of the body by moving
along the blood vessels or through the lymph
system. This spreading is called metastasis.
Common Cancer Types
• Skin cancer

• Breast cancer

• Cervical cancer

• Prostate cancer

• Lung cancer

• Leukemia (bone marrow cancer

producing harmful white blood cells)
Diabetes
• a disease in which the body produces little or
no insulin at all.

• Insulin, produced by the Pancreas, is

responsible for the conversion of
carbohydrates into glucose - source of
energy. Unused carbohydrates are stored as
fats.

• High fats and glucose, and low insulin can

lead to certain complications such as
cardiovascular diseases.

• Signs and Symptoms: Increased thirst,

frequent urination, continuous hunger,
weight loss, blurred vision, tiredness.
Types of Diabetes

Type 1 – Immune cells damage

pancreatic cells Type 2 – Insulin cannot convert
energy source
Arthritis
• Refers to inflammation of joints. It usually occurs
during old age.

• Signs and Symptoms: Joint pains, swelling, stiffness,

and inflammation.

• Types of Arthritis:

a. Osteoarthritis – is a disease of older people. It

results from the wear and tear of joints, especially
those of the hands, hips, knees, and spine

b. Rheumatoid arthritis – causes pain and swelling in

many joins throughout the body. This can lead to
deformity and crippling.
Renal/Kidney Failure
• is a medical condition in which the kidneys
fail to adequately filter waste product from the
blood.

• Symptoms include changes in urination,

swelling in legs, ankles, feet, face or hands,
extreme skin rashes and itching, nausea and
vomiting, shortness of breath, feeling cold,
dizziness, and concentration problems
NCD Prevention

Less fat intake lessens the risk of clogged

blood vessels and arteries.
NCD Prevention

Less sugar and salt intake regulate blood

sugar and blood flows efficiently, giving
less stress to the heart to pump the blood.
NCD Prevention

Proper diet helps reduce the risk of certain

NCDs as some nutrients like fiber can
clear cancerous substances from the body.
NCD Prevention

Less exposure to chemicals and radiation

reduce the risk of certain cancers.
NCD Prevention

A positive mental and emotional health

produce ENDORPHINS – hormones
responsible on boosting body
performance and functions.
