WHAT IS A LEADER?

INTRODUCTION

• When we talk about leaders in our country or in the world we generally think about some people

with a high statute in the society. But defining what truly marks these persons as good leaders is

a bit more challenging. Is it simply their position that make them good leaders, is it something

more? What is really a leader?


DEFINITION

• For Peter Drucker “ leadership is the lifting of a man’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a man’s

performance to a higher standard, the building of a man’s personality beyond its normal limitations.”

• A leader is someone who inspires passion and motivation in followers

• A leader is someone with a vision and the path to realize it

• A leader is someone who ensures their team has support and tools to achieve their goals
WHAT DOES A LEADER DO?

• Coach: A good leader strives to develop their employees and teams through coaching and

mentoring

• Guide: this comes through building and organizing teams, setting goals, devising ways to

achieve those goals, and leading employees through the process.

• Inspire: a great leader can leverage their storytelling, empathy, and communications skills to

inspire their employees or team.


WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON
CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEADER?

• Purpose: without a sense of purpose, it’s hard to motivate team members

• Motivation: leaders are great motivators and create value- aligned goals so team members feel

personally inspired to work toward the company’s vision

• Vision: Leaders see the bigger picture and can unite their team members behind their vision.

• Empathy: Leaders empathize with their team members

• Creativity: leaders innovate in bold and creative splashes

• Team Vision: leaders should consider team members’ vision

• Always trying to improve: leaders never stop bettering themselves


WHAT TO DO TO BECOME A BETTER
LEADER?

• Lsten and learn: leaders take time to listen and leran about their team members and the unique qualities of

leadership they each have

• Create shared goals for the team: this can help ensure everyone feels valued and encompassed in the

company’s larger mission

• Always seek opportunities to improve: leaders take every opportunity to better themselves and their

teams.
