Radiation Protection Act

• Any practice that use or generate radiation either in the form of


sources, NORM or radioactive waste is subject to the Act and its
provisions. Authorisation, inspection and enforcement.

Waste Water and Dinking Water
Quality
• Portable Water, WHO Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality
• Safety Assessment and characterization of activities
• Limits exist for both waste water treatment (1 Bq/g, 1Bq/L) and
portable water (as per SI 62 of 2011 schedule summarized as α
0.5Bq/L and Gross β 1.0 Bq/L)
• For waste water treatment need to assess bio-waste and other
residues for possible contamination before release or disposal
• Continuous monitoring (minimum monitoring plans)
Exemption
• Issued where there is low risk
• 3 year exemption, then review
• For activity concentrations below 0.3Bq/g
• Annual effective dose of 0.3mSv/a and 1mSv/a for public and
workers
Annual Monitoring

• The level of radiation warrants monitoring. It is close to the limits.


• No detailed radiation protection measures expected
• Development of annual monitoring plan for monitoring at all sites
that have activity levels between exemption limit and licensing
limit
• The classification is reviewed to consider new findings, can be
downgraded to exemption or upgraded to licensing
• Facility to strengthen existing worker protective measures
Licensing
• Where radiation levels are high and the risk to workers and the
public is significant to magnitudes referred by SI 99 0f 2013
• Radiation Protection Program to be put in place for worker and
public protection, annual inspections
• Management of discharges into the environment in line with
regulations
• Extensive monitoring at all sites to ensure management options
are developed, review of classification where necessary
• Appointment of Radiation Safety Officer as required by Section 16
of the Radiation Protection Act
• Enforcement of requirements
