Concrete for slip form application

• Continuous pouring of the concrete to the moving formwork.

• The formwork is raised vertically.
• The concrete to be used needs to be workable enough to be placed into
the form and consolidated by vibration,
• The concrete has quick-setting enough to emerge from the form with
strength.
• Benefits: -
• Effective reduction of the engaged manpower.
• Cost effective
• Productivity improvement
• Absence of construction joints
Types: -
 Vertical slip forming
 Horizontal slip forming
 Tapered slip forming
 Cantilever forming
 Egg-shaped slip forming
 Conical slip forming

Slip form: -
 Height= 1- 1.5m
 Consist of vertical panels, walings, yokes, horizontal cross bars,
jacks, jack rods, and a working platform
Tests: -
Penetration resistance: -
 Initial and final setting determined by penetration resistance
 Penetration resistance (Initial setting time) = 3.5Mpa
 Penetration resistance (final setting time) = 27.6Mpa

ASTM C – 403
Case study- Quality Control of Concrete during the Slip Form
Erection of Pylon
• 10 m-high pylon with a hollow section.
• Real time quality monitoring by surface velocity
• Minimum surface velocity= 1100 m/s

Mix proportion of concrete

Penetration test:-

• Early setting time is defined as the time at which the penetration resistance reaches 3.5 Mpa
• High temperatures fasten the rate of cement hydration accelerating setting
Compressive strength-
Minimum compressive strength= 0.2 MPa
Surface velocity test: -
• Ultrasonic waves are generated.
• Velocity of the ultrasonic wave increases according to the progress of
the hardening of concrete.
Horizontal slip form:-
• Pavements
• High strength concrete(minimum M30)
• More fine materials
• Appropriate admixture dose
• Flexural Strength = 4.5MPa
• Minimum cement content
• OPC = 360 Kg/cu.m
• OPC (Blended with FA- 20%) = 340 Kg/cu.m
• PPC(OPC + 20% FA) = 425 Kg/cu.m
• Workability
• Slump = 25±10 mm
• Water/Cement Ratio = max. 0.45 (OPC)
= max. 0.50 (OPC Blended with FA)

Vertical slip form
• High workability
• Low heat of hydration
• Frost resistance is similar to traditional cast structures

SCC as slip form concrete
• Problem with Conventional concrete
• Low consistency- High vibration required for removal of entrapped air and
compaction.
• Segregation
