WHAT IS GENDER FOR YOU?
SEX
• Refers to biological and one’s role in reproduction.
It could be a male or female depends on there
genitalia.
SEX

• Human has 23 paired chromosome. 22 pairs for


Autosome or for the traits and 1 pair is for the Gonosome
or sex chromosome.
• Female has an XX Chromosome
• Male Has an XY Chromosome
INTERSEX/HERMAPHRODITES
• A person born with a combination for male and female biological trait, it
could be also in genes and hormone.
• An overlapping or lack from their chromosome
• Example: XO,XXY,XXXY etc.
XO CHROMOSOME
• Also known as Turner Syndrome
• syndrome typically occurs when a child receives an X chromosome
from one parent, but no X or Y chromosome from the other. This
condition is called monosomy X. The child is considered to be female
because no Y chromosome is present.
XXY CHROMOSOME
• Also known as Klinefelter Syndrome.
• This is where boys and men are born with an extra X chromosome.
Chromosomes are packages of genes found in every cell in the body.
XXXY CHROMOSOME
• XXXY syndrome is a chromosomal condition in boys and men that
causes intellectual disability, developmental delays, physical differences,
and an inability to father biological children (infertility). Its signs and
symptoms vary among affected individuals.
GENDER
• Socially constructed roles and relationship, personality traits, attitudes,
behaviors, value, relative and power and influence that society ascribe to
the two sexes on different basis (Health Canada 2000)
GENDER IDENTITY
• One’s innermost concept of self your self as a male or female
or both or neither. This is how individual perceive themselves
and how they label themselves.
GENDER EXPRESSION
• Refers to the way in which people externally communicate their gender
identity to others through behavior, clothing, haircut, voice and other
form of presentation.
• Gender expression should not be viewed as an indication of gender
orientation.
GENDER ORIENTATION
• Being romantically or sexually attracted to people of specific gender.
• “our gender orientation and gender identity are two distinct part of our
overall identity”.
GENDER ROLE
• Is a set of roles, activities and expectation and behaviors assign
to female and male to society.
MASCULINE
• Refers in having qualities or an appearance traditionally
associated with men or boys.
FEMININE
• Refers in having qualities or an appearance traditionally
associated with women or girls.
TRANSGENDER
• Sometimes use an umbrella to describe anyone whose identity or
behavior falls outside of stereotypical gender norms. Moreover, this are
the individual which their gender identity does not correspond to their
assign birth.
• “Being a transgender does not imply any specific gender orientation”
GENDER NORMATIVE
• Also known as CISGENDER
• This are the people where their gender identity correspond to
their assign birth and expression.
GENDER FLUIDITY
• Conveys a wider, more flexible range of gender expression
with interest and behaviors that may vary or change from day
to day.

GENDER STEREOTYPES
• Is a generalized view of perceptions about attribute, or characteristics
that are or ought to be possessed by women and men or the roles that are
or should performed by men and women.
• “Women is Weak”
• “Boy should be strong”
GENDER GAPS
• Is a difference between women and men as reflected in
social, political, intellectual, cultural or economical.
• Oxfam International provides the following data:
• EDUCATION- women are comprise of two thirds of all
children who denied to access education.
• WORK- Women do the two thirds of the world’s work but
only compensate 10% of its income.
• WELFARE- Domestic Violence is one of the biggest cause of
injury or death of women globally.
• DEMOCRACY- 14% of the worlds governmental seats or
position is held by women.
OTHER GENDER GAPS
• For the Philippines, Female receives only 76 cents for every dollar earned by men. 30 cents
in medium enterprises and 20 per cent in large enterprises (World bank 2012)
• Since age 15, 1 out of 5 women has already experience physical violence. To those who are
married, 18% are sexually and physically abuse by their spouse. (UN Women 2012)
• 50.4% of women against 78.4 % of men are in workforce under the Aquino administration
(Ramos-Shahani 2012)
• Female prostitute are continue criminalize while men who participate in their exploitation
are not held liable for the prosecution (Ramos-Shahani 2012)
