Plant survival
Unit 2 Lesson 1

By Ms. Sirine Ayad

Photosynthesis
Like all living things, plants have basic needs in order
to grow.
Sunlight is important because it supplies the energy
needed to drive the chemical reactions in
photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide and water.
Most plants need sunlight, nutrients from the soil, air
and water.
If these needs are not met, plants cannot thrive.
Cellular respiration
Plants need nutrients such as nitrogen and potassium for growth. They also require
oxygen for cellular respiration to break down the food they have made into energy, which
can be used for growth and survival.
Plant Structures
Vascular plants have roots, stems and leaves. Water enters a vascular
plant throughout its roots, which also anchor the plant in the soil.
Xylem and Phloem
Running lengthwise through the roots and stems are the xylem and
phloem. Xylem cells carry water and mineral nutrients to the leaves.
Phloem cells carry food made in the leaves to other parts of the
plant.
Energy need
Nutrients are substances that a living thing needs to
stay healthy. Plants need energy to meet these needs.
Energy is the ability to perform work or change
something. Plants use structures such as leaves,
stems, and roots to obtain energy. Plants need
carbon dioxide from the air to make their food.
Plant structures
Tiny openings on the underside of most leaves allow air to enter. Openings
called stomata, can close and prevent water from escaping. Other plant
structures obtain the other materials that the plant needs. Water is absorbed
by a plant's roots. It travels up the center of the stem through specialized
tissues called xylem.
Plant needs

Plants have basic needs to live and grow. The use their structures to
obtain what they need. Plants need enough space where they grow for
their roots to spread out and absorb water and nutrients from the soil.
Transpiration
Transpiration is the evaporation of water from a plant's leaves. As water evaporates
from the leaves, more water is carried from the bottom of the plant to the top. Water
moves into the leaf, replacing the water that has evaporated
