INTRODUCTION
RATIONALE
Students go through diverse types of problems, such as social problems, academic burdens, and
financial constraints. Students experienced challenges everywhere, that is, at home, with friends, in
school, and in the classroom. In fact, problems are just around the corner and cannot be avoided
because they are part of a student’s life.
College can be a very stressful period in the lives of most students. Oftentimes, most students
struggle in their academic preparation. However, it is believed that certain factors may allow some
students to succeed academically, such as effective use of coping skills. Many students who can handle
problems well have effective problem coping skills. They use various coping strategies simultaneously,
and strategies are also like to change over time, depending on the effectiveness of the applied strategy.
On the other hand, the academic achievement is the key criterion in judging the skills, capabilities,
and the total potentials of the students. However, if students are not performing very well in academics
as what they are expected to deliver, therefore, there are some factors that hinder or hold them back to
perform their tasks and achieve their full potential as a future professional teachers.
In connection with these, this research aims to identify the problems encountered by the BEED
students of Bohol Island State University- Main Campus and the coping mechanisms used to
improve their academic performance.

THE PROBLEM
The Main Problem
The main purpose of this study is to determine the
problems encountered by the BEED students and their
coping mechanisms used to improve their academic
performance in Bohol Island State University Main
Campus A.Y. 2022-2023.

Back to Agenda
Statement of the Problem
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the participants in terms of:
1.1 Age;
1.2 Gender;
1.3 Year Level;
1.4 General Weighted Average of the 1st and 2nd semester of A.Y. 2022-2023?
2. What is the level of the problems encountered by the BEED students in terms of:
2.1 Academic Problems;
2.2 Family Problems;
2.3 Financial Problems;
2.4 Social Problems;
2.5 Personal Problems;
2.6 Emotional Problems; and
2.7 Spiritual Problems?
Statement of the Problem
3. What are the coping mechanisms used by the BEED students to improve their
academic performance?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the problems encountered by the BEED

students and their academic performance?

5. Is there a significant relationship between the coping mechanisms used by the BEED
students and their academic performance?

6. What plan of action shall be proposed based on the results of the study?

RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
Research Methodology
Design
The researchers will use descriptive
research with the aid of survey and
correlational methods of research.
Research Methodology
Environment
The study will be conducted in Bohol Island State University Main Campus located at
CPG Avenue, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines.

Participants
The participants of the study are the BEED students purposely selected among the
courses in College of Teacher Education of Bohol Island State University Main Campus
enrolled in the Academic Year 2022-2023.
Research Methodology
Instrument
In this study, survey questionnaire will be used in determining the problems
encountered by the BEED students in relation to their academic performance, and the
relationship of the coping mechanisms used by the BEED students in relation to their
academic performance.
The questionnaire is composed of two parts: Part I is a modified questionnaire from the
study entitled “College Students’ Problems and their Link to Academic Performance for
Needs-driven Student Programs” by Dagdag, Januard et. al., (2019). On the other hand,
Part II is also a modified questionnaire from the study entitled “Assessment of Stress
Related Issues & Coping Mechanisms among College Students” by Mankato, Minnesota
(2018).

Research Methodology
Statistical Treatment
• To determine the profile of the participants, frequency and percentage will be utilized.

• To determine the levels of the problems encountered by the BEED students, the
weighted mean formula will be used.

• To determine the coping mechanisms used by the BEED students, the weighted mean
formula will be used.

• To determine if there is a significant relationship between the problems encountered by

the BEED students and their academic performance, as well as the coping
mechanisms used in relation to academic performance, the Chi Square will be utilized.
