Simple Present Tense

 The simple present (also called present simple or present indefinite) is a verb tense which is used to show repetition,
habit or generalization. Less commonly, the simple present can be used to talk about scheduled actions, in some
cases, and actions. Read on for detailed descriptions, examples, and simple present exercises. Depending on the
person, the simple present tense is formed by using the root form or by adding ‑s or ‑es to the end.
 In the third person singular, -s or -es is added. Questions are
made with does and negative forms are made with does not.
 Statement: He speaks English.

 Question: Does he speak English?

 Negative: He does not speak English.


Use Present Tense
1. For repeated or regular actions in the present time period.
I take the train to the office.
The train to Berlin leaves every hour.
John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.
2. For facts.
The President of The USA lives in The White House.
A dog has four legs.
We come from Switzerland.
Use Present Tense
3. For habits.

 I get up early every day.

 Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.

 They travel to their country house every weekend.

4. For things that are always / generally true.

 It rains a lot in winter.

 The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.

 They speak English at work.

2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and


add -IES.
study – studies
carry – carries
worry – worries

play – plays
enjoy – enjoys
