CHARACTERISTICS OF WATER: HUMAN INFLUENCE TO HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
Ruffamae Bandolon BSED-SCI3B OBJECTIVES: Discuss the Property and Characteristics of water
Explain Human influence to hydrologic
cycle MOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND POLARITY • Water is made up of two hydrogen atoms one oxygen atom (H2O), Forming a V-shaped molecule structure. • The oxygen atom in water has a slightly negative charge ,while the hydrogen atom has have a slightly positive charge as e result, water molecules are polar ,meaning they have a positive and negative end. SOLVENT PROPERTIES : • Water is an excellent solvent , meaning it can dissolve many substances. • Due to it's polarity, water can separate compounds into individual ions, facilitating chemical reaction in biological systemsl. HIGH HEAT CAPACITY: • water has high specific heat capacity, which means it can absorb and store a large amount of heat energy without a significant change in temperature • this property helps regulate temperature in both living organisms and environment. • waters high heat capacity contribute to the moderation of climate and the stability of aquatic ecosystems. COHESION AND SURFACE TENSION: • water molecules are attracted to each other due to hydrogen bonding, resulting in cohesion. • cohesion gives water it's liquid state and allows it to form drops and maintain surface tension. • surface tension enables water to support small objects, like insects, on its surface without sinking DENSITY ANOMALY: • water exhibits a density Anomaly, which means that as it cools below 4°c (39.2°F),it becomes less dense and expands. • this property causes ice to be less dense than liquid water, allowing it to float on water bodies. • the density anomaly of water is important for insulating bodies of water, protecting aquatic like beneath the surface. HUMAN INFLUENCE ON THE HYDROLOGIC CYCLE DEFORESTATION: •clearing forests impacts water cycle regulation • Reduced interception of rainfall, increase runoff, and decreased infiltration • alters the amount and timing of water reaching rivers and groundwater URBANIZATION AND LAND USE CHANGES: • Urban growth and land use modification affect water cycle dynamics • increased sealing of surface with concrete and asphalt • decreased infiltration, increased surface runoff, and flood risk WATER • Human extraction of water from rivers, lakes, and ground WITHDRAWA water • Disrupts naturals flow patterns and depletes water sources L • Affects water availability for agriculture, industry, and domestic use • Dams and reservoirs alter natural river flow DAM • Benefits like water storage, flood control and hydropower
CONSTRUCTI • Downsides include disrupted ecosystem, sediment
transport, and downstream water availability ON POLLUTION :
• Human activities introduce pollutants into water bodies
• Industrial waste, agriculture runoff, and untreated sewage • Degrades water quality, harms ecosystem, and impacts drinking water availability CLIMATE CHANGE: • Human-induced climate change impacts the hydrologic cycle • Rising temperature increase evaporation rates • Alters perception patterns, leading to droughts, floods, and changes in water availability GENERALIZATI ON:
