PURE SUBSTANCE
ELEMENTS &COMPOUNDS

Elements & compounds are pure

substances that can’t be broken
up into simpler substances.

There are about 120 elements

that are listed on the periodic
table and combinations of these
make up millions of compounds.
DIATOMIC ELEMENTS

Diatomic elements are pure elements that form molecules

consisting of two atoms bonded together

The diatomic elements are nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine,

chlorine, bromine, iodine, and hydrogen
COMPOUNDS

• Two or more elements make up a compound.

• The smallest particle of a compound is a
molecule, made up of atoms from the elements
concerned, in particular ratios.
FORMING COMPOUNDS
COMPOUNDS

• Formed by chemical reactions

• Consist of molecules or + & - ions

• Held together by chemical bonds

• Elements always combined in fixed ratios

• Have different properties to the elements from

which they are formed
