Introduction to Career Guidance:


Starting My Career Planning
The inception of the Senior High School
program in 2016, particularly in the public
high schools, was among others a
preparation for Junior High students to the
transition ahead, which would more or less
approximate their interests, skills, talents,
abilities, and values in alignment to the field
of work or study or business as they enter
Senior High School.

Introduction to Career Guidance:


Thus, the whole Senior High School endeavor took
on the spiraling holistic approach, offering and honing
students’ skills under the Technical-Vocational and
Livelihood Track or the intellectual pursuit under the
Academic Track or the physically inclined pursuit in the
Sports Track or the inclination to culture and the arts in
the Arts and Design Track. Regardless of student
interest, the Senior High School program permeated
itself with the varied fields of interest for the students
to choose from as they desire.

an Adult
We have heard of success stories time and
again. To start this session, let us listen to the
real-life story of Ben:
Ben comes from a family of farmers from Barangay
Candabong in the southern town of Dumanjug, Cebu. Having
less in life, he had to find his way by doubly helping his
parents tilling the land (mag-uma in Cebuano) before and
after school while still in his elementary years. A seven-
kilometer walk to and from school with no painit but only
“painit” sa adlaw, as Ben fondly recalls, was his daily routine.
As such, there were times that he had to be absent from
school as he would be out in the field instead, helping his
father.

To start this session, here is a real-life
story of success:
After his elementary years, a difficult life-decision had to
be made. He had to forego high school and leave home for
the city to start working as a helper (nagpa boy in Cebuano).
He did this for three years. Despite his ordeal, he never gave
up his resolve and dream of getting back to school and
become successful someday. It was quite remarkable,
however, that despite his young mind, he made it a habit to
visit the church and attend Mass whenever he could. Such
was Ben’s dedication to work and, of course, deep faith in God.

To start this session, here is a real-life
story of success:
He never made poverty an excuse for him to stop dreaming
and become discouraged at life. After three years of working
as a helper, he returned to his hometown in Dumanjug, Cebu,
and started his high school at the age of seventeen. When not
in school, at times he would work as a konduktor for a bus
plying the Dumanjug-Cebu route to supplement the family’s
meager income.
Years of hard work had passed and he graduated from
high school. Since his parents could not send him to college,
once again he asked their blessing to leave home for the

To start this session, here is a real-life
story of success:
second time and look for a job in the city. He doubled as a
security guard (night watch) by night and student by day. He
hopped from one university to another just so he could adjust
to his work-and-schooling schedule. Life was a real struggle
then for Ben! Despite the tight schedule between work and
schooling, he tightened his grip on the providence of the Lord
and managed to attend Mass every day. On top of everything,
he even devoted time to serve the Lord by becoming a choir
member of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral Choir. It was
here that he fortunately met and came to know the late
Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, who ultimately sponsored him when

To start this session, here is a real-life story
of success:
he realized that after all these years, after his persistent visit
to church, God was calling him to become a priest. Without
any doubt in his mind, he prayed that God would send an
instrument for him to be able to enter the seminary. True
enough, he had found a sponsor in Cardinal Vidal, who
promised him then to be the one to pay for his tuition while
in the seminary.
Indeed, what happened to Ben is a materialization of the
saying “Life gives its all to the man who gives life his all!” by
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, author of the book The Power of
Positive Thinking.

To start this session, here is a real-life
story of success:
Years had passed, and thirty years ago, Fr. Benedict “Ben” Zozobrado
Ejares was among the newly ordained priests of the Archdiocese of
Cebu.

Indeed, Ben’s life story is no magic at all and with no shortcuts.


He had lived through life’s hardships and challenges, but he had the
resolve. His self-awareness of his skills and abilities, his
persistence, his dedication, his hard work, his respect and
love for parents and family, and deep faith in God—these all
contributed to his chosen path of becoming a priest.

Here is Fr. Ben’s message to all would-
be Grade 10 Completers and Senior High
School students and graduates:
Alang sa mga kabataan nga mo-moving-up, mo-graduate, padong sa
college, ang ako ra gyung ipaambit ang akong kasinati-an nga dili
gyud babag ang kapobre ug kawad-on pagkab-ot sa edukasyon . . .
Basta aduna lang gyud kay salig sa Ginoo, ampo sa Ginoo, ug buligan
gyud sa imong mga paningkamot ba! “Nasa Diyos ang awa, nasa tao
ang gawa!”
We must cooperate with the grace of God, and God will do the
rest! Maningkamot gyud ta . . . dili lang nga magsalig ta sa atong
ginikanan, nga himoon natong rason ang kawad-on! Gitagaan ta sa
Ginoo ug intellect, maayong panghunahuna. Ato ning gamiton alang
sa maayong kaugmaon!

Here is Fr. Ben’s message to all would-
be Grade 10 Completers and Senior High
School students and graduates:
Kay diha sa eskuwelahan, diha sa atong pagkab-ot ug
edukasyon, wala ta taga-i ug isda . . . hinono-a, gitudlo-an ta unsaon
pagpangisda!

In God we trust! In God’s time, he will make all things beautiful .
