EXPONENTS AND ITS LAWS

EXPONENTIAL FORM
• Is an alternative method of expressing number.

For example:

EXPONENT
Is a number which
represents the number of
times a base is to be
multiplied by itself.
BASE
Is a number which is to be
multiplied by itself
according to the exponent. = 5  5 = 25
Law 1: Product Law

States that when multiplying two powers with the same base, just add the
exponents.
Example:

1. = 32

Law 2: Quotient Law

States that when dividing two powers with the same base, just subtract the
exponents.

Law 3: Power of a power

To simplify any power of power, simply multiply the exponents.

Example:

Law 4: Power with different bases

In dividing different bases, it can’t be simplified unless the exponents are

equal.
Example:
1.

Law 5: Zero Exponent

A nonzero base raised to zero the result is equal to one.

Law 6: Negative Exponent

A nonzero base raised to a negative exponent is equal to the reciprocal of the

base raised to the positive exponent.
