This document discusses degrees of freedom in structural systems. It defines a degree of freedom as the number of possible movements of a structure or the number of unknown quantities that must be determined to solve an equation system. It describes how the number and type of degrees of freedom depend on the type of support of a structure and the dimensions of motion. A 2D structure has 3 degrees of freedom per node, while a 3D structure has 6. Degrees of freedom are also classified as single or multiple, with single describing motion in one direction and multiple requiring two or more coordinates to describe the motion.

MANIPUR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TAKYELPAT, IMPHAL AUGUST, 2023 What Is Degree Of Freedom A Degree of Freedom is the number of possible movements of a structural system. It can also be described as unknown quantities that have to be determined to solve an equation system. It is used to describe displacements and rotations in a certain direction at a nodal point. Types of degree of freedom • The types of degree of freedom depends upon:
I. On the basis of types of support
II. On the basis of types of motion.
DOF For Various Support Condition Depending on the types of support, a structure can restrict certain DOF so that no deformation can occur. For a 2D structure, each node has 3 possible DOF. y
i. Translation movement in x-axis.
ii. Translation movement in the direction perpendicular to the x-direction i.e. y-axis. x iii. Rotation about x-y-axis. For a 3D structure, it has 6 possible DOF.
i. Displacement and rotation in x-axis.
ii. Displacement and rotation in y-axis.
iii. Displacement and rotation in z-axis.
On The Basis Of Types Of Motion.
On the basis of motion of the system DOF is again classified into two types i.e.,
i. Single degree of freedom.
ii. Multiple degree of freedom.
Single Degree Of Freedom SDOF describes the motion of a system that is constrained to only a single linear or angular direction. The system will only move in x-, y- or z-direction or will rotate about x-, y- or z-axis. MULTIPLE DEGREE OF FREEDOM It can be defined as those requiring two or more coordinates to describe their motion. The formula for MDOF in matrix form is given in eqn (1).
