BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE
Engineering mechanics is the application of
mechanics to solve problems involving common

Dr. Odunfa Moradeyo

engineering elements. The goal of this
Engineering Mechanics course is to expose
students to problems in mechanics as applied to
plausibly real-world scenarios. It is also the
study of forces and the resulting deformations,
accelerations, motions, vibrations and other
responses they cause.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/ GOALS

 The objectives of the course are; to present a

comprehensive treatment of different operations being
carried out in different types of Engineering

Dr. Odunfa Moradeyo .

workshops.
 Building on the knowledge acquired in Mathematics
and Physics courses in science Faculty. TME 212
(Engineering Mechanics) prepares the student to use
Engineering mechanics knowledge in the design and
application of machines and also in Engineering
practice.
LEARNING OUTCOMES

 On completion of this course, the students will

be able to ;

Dr. Odunfa Moradeyo .

• Know fundamental principles involved in the
design, installation and operation of machines
• Know the various types of machines and
engineering systems
• Know the various operations being carried out in
any standard engineering systems.

INTRODUCTION
 Engineering Mechanics is defined as the science
that describes and predicts the conditions of rest

or motion of bodies under the action of forces.
Therefore Engineering Mechanics is divided into
two categories;

(i) Dynamics is the study of motion of systems

and forces associated with the motion, which may
be linear, angular or a combination of linear and
angular.

(ii) Statics is the study of forces which acts on a

body at rest (equilibrium)

Basically, We consider a rigid body and a

deformable body. While a deformable body might
be elongated or compressed under the effect of
forces, rigid bodies do not get deformed under the
influence of forces.

A rigid body is defined as a combination of a

large number of particles occupying fixed
positions with respect to each other. It is possible
to study the motion of a rigid body without
reference to the forces acting on. This is referred
to as kinematics.
DYNAMICS
 Dynamics deals with motion of a system and the
forces acting on it.
 Linear motion:

Dr. Odunfa Moradeyo .

(i)Velocity of a body is the rate of change of its
displacement from some reference position with
respect to time.
(1)
Where V = velocity, s = displacement, t = time
(ii) Acceleration of a body is the time rate of
change of its velocity with respect to time
(2)
Where a = acceleration

changes from initial U to final V in time T while
