magazine started featuring comic strips, such as “Mga kabalbalan ni Kenkoy”(The misadventures of
Kenkoy) created by Tony Velasquez. Velasquez went to recognized as the “Father of Filipino
Comics.”

With the coming of the Americans to the country, local comics were clearly influenced by popular
U.S. comics with the superheroes as the main characters resulting in local counterparts such as Darna
and Captain Barbell.
