Lesson Objectives
We will cover the following topic I.A

 Revision of previous lesson

 Solving ratios using “Ratio Method” and
“Unitary Method.”
 Direct proportion and Inverse proportion.
Ratio Method Starter
 You want to teach a class which has 2 girls for every 1
boy.
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 9
students?
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 18
students?
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 36
students?
Ratio Method Starter
A bottling Machine fills 500 bottles in 15 minutes , How many bottles
 You will
want it fillto teach
in 1.5 hoursa class which has 2 girls for every 1
boy.
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 9
students?
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 18
students?
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 36
students?
Unitary Method for direct proportion
Starter
(Note : For indirect proportion , we use a different Unitary method)
 You method
Unitary want tofor

If two quantities are so related that the increase or decrease in one causes the corresponding increase
boy.
or decrease in the other, they are said to be in direct proportion. Let us take an example of no. of
copies and their cost:
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 9
students?
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 18
students?
 How many boys and girls will be in class of 36
students?
Starter
A bottling Machine fills 500 bottles in 15 minutes , How many bottles
will it fill in 1.5 hours. Use Unitary Method of direct proportion
 You want to teach a class which has 2 girls for every 1

Dividing quantity in a given ratio using 2 methods
Question : Divide 72 in the ratio 2:3:4

Solution :
Method 1:
Step 1: Total parts = 2+3+4= 9 Parts
Step 2 : Now we get the parts as
2/9 x 72 = 16
3/9 x 72 = 24
4/9 x 72 = 32
Solution :
Method 2 Unitary method (the direct proportion method):
Step 1: Total parts = 2+3+4= 9 Parts
Step 2 : Now apply Unitary method
9 parts should make = 72 parts
1 parts should make = 72/9 parts
So 2 parts should make = (72/9)x2 = 16 parts
3 parts should make = (72/9)x3 = 24 parts
4 parts should make = (72/9)x4 = 32 parts
Question : A factory produces cars in red, blue, white and green in the ratio 7 : 5 : 3 :
1.
Out of a production of 28 000 cars how many are red?

In Inverse proportion
Unitary method for In Inverse proportion
If two quantities are so related that the decrease or increase in one causes the corresponding increase
or decrease in the other is called inverse proportion. Let us take an example of the number of men
and their working days:

To find the unit value for such quantities we have to multiply the gross value by the number
of quantities. And then, we have to divide the unit value by the required number of quantities
to find the required value.
Comparison of Unitary method for Direct and Indirect proportion
Note : The 3rd step is same in both methods.
