NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CIGARETTE

SMOKING ON RESPIRATORY AND

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
At the end of the lesson the students should
be able to:
1. Explain the negative effects of cigarette
smoking on the circulatory and respiratory
system.
2 .
Perform activity which can explain the
negative effects of cigarette smoking on the
circulatory and respiratory system.
3. Explain the importance of knowing the
negative effects of cigarette smoking to our
body.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Which organ system will be more affected due to cigarette smoking,
the respiratory or circulatory system? Why?
2. What are the negative effects of cigarette smoking to our body?
3. What diseases will be developed due to cigarette smoking?
4. What are the possible ways to avoid or prevent these diseases?
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CIGARETTE
SMOKING ON THE RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM
1. CHRONIC BRONCHITIS
2. EMPHYSEMA
3. ASTHMA
4. TUBERCULOSIS
5. LUNG CANCER
WHAT HAPPENS TO RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM WHEN YOU SMOKE?
Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging your
airways and the small air sacs (alveoli) found in
your lungs.
RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS
DISEASE
1. CHRONIC Cough often with mucus, tight chest, shortness of breath, tired
BRONCHITIS

2. EMPHYSEMA Frequent cough that produces a lot of mucus, shortness of

breath, tightness in your chest.

3. TUBERCULOSIS Coughing for more than three or more weeks, coughing up

blood or mucus, unintentional weight loss, fatigue, fever, night
sweats, chills, loss of appetite.

4. LUNG CANCER Coughing that gets worse or doesn’t go away, chest pain,
shortness of breath, coughing up blood, feeling very tired all the
time, weight loss
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CIGARETTE
SMOKING ON THE CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM
1. INCREASE HEART RATE AND BLOOD
PRESSURE
2. CORONARY HEART DISEASE
3. ARTHERIOSCLEROSIS
4. VASCULAR DISEASE
WHAT HAPPENS TO CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM WHEN YOU SMOKE?
-Causes the blood vessels to tighten, which restricts the
flow of blood. Overtime, the narrowing along with the
damage in the blood vessels, can cause heart disease.
-the carbon monoxide present in the cigarette displaces
oxygen.
CIRCULATOR SYMPTOMS
Y DISEASE
1. HIGH BLOOD Early morning headaches, nosebleed, irregular heart
PRESSURE rhythms, vision changes and buzzing in the ear.

2. CORONARY HEART Chest pain, weakness, lightheadedness, nausea, cold sweat, pain
DISEASE or discomfort in the shoulder or arms.

3. Chest pain, sudden arm or leg weakness or numbness, difficulty

ARTHERIOSCLEROSI speaking, brief loss of vision in one eye, pain when walking, high
S blood pressure, kidney failure
4. VASCULAR DISEASE Wounds that won’t heal over pressure points such as heels or
ankles.
Numbness, weakness, heaviness in muscles.
Restricted mobility
Varicose veins
HIGHLY DAMAGING
COMPONENTS OF CIGARETTE
SMOKING
1. CARBON MONOXIDE- poisonous, colorless gas
2. OXIDIZING CHEMICALS-highly reactive chemicals that
can damage heart muscles and blood vessels
3. METALS-arsenic, beryllium, chromium, cobalt
4. 4. RADIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS- carcinogenic
REASONS WHY PEOPLE SMOKE

1. PEER PRESSURE
2. PARENTAL INFLUENCE
3. MEDIA INFLUENCE
