ABSTRACT

 A Brake is a device in which is artificial frictional

resistance is applied to a moving disc or moving member,
in order to reduced the speed or stops the motion of the
machine.
 An electromagnetic braking system uses the magnetic
force to operate brakes and the power to be supplied
electrically by the regulator. These types of brakes are
totally frictionless.
 These system is a combination of electromechanical
concepts.
 An electromagnetic braking system uses magnetic force to
engage the brake. The disc is connected to the tyre and the
electromagnet is mounted on the frame.
 When the electricity is applied to the coil the manetic field
is generated across the armature because of the current
flowing across the coil and causes the armature to get
attracted toward the coil.
 As a result, it develops a torque and eventually the vehicle
comes to rest. Electromagnetic braking system works
under eddy current.
 Working principle of this system is that when the magnetic
flux passes through and the perpendicular to the rotating
wheel the eddy current flows opposite to rotating wheel or
rotor direction.
 In this project work we understand that , it minimize the
brake failure and avoid road accident, we can reduce the
time of the breaking to the 3seconds.
 The armature is placed behind the rotor, which does not get
in contact.
INTRODUCTION
Electromagnetic brakes slow or stop motion using
electromagnetic force to apply mechanical resistance. The
original name was "electro-mechanical brakes" but over the
years the name changed to "electromagnetic brakes", referring
to their actuation method. Since becoming popular in the mid-
20th century especially in trains and trams, the variety of
applications and brake designs has increased dramatically, but
the basic operation remains the same. Electromagnetic brakes
are the brakes working on the electric power & magnetic
power. They works on the principle of electromagnetism.
Electromagnetic Braking System
OBJECTIVES

 The main objective of our project is to control the speed of

the vehicle as well as to stop it when and where quickly and
efficiently.
 By using electromagnetic braking, we can reduce the reaction
time of braking
 By automating the system we can implement it on the
automobiles for the safety measures on daily basis.
 We can minimize the time of the braking and bring to 3
seconds
 These systems can be used as an additional braking system in
aircrafts which provides extra safety measures.
WORKING PRINCIPLE

If the electromagnet is not energized, the rotation of the disc is free and
accelerates uniformly under the action of the weight to which its shaft is
connected. When the electromagnet is energized, the rotation of the disc is
retarded and the energy absorbed appears as heating of the disc.

 Individual wheel braking is possible

 A problem of wear and tear is negligible.

 No need for special changes in hot or cold climates like in case of disc brakes.

 There is no oil leakage.

APPLICATIONS

 Used In Railway
 Used in automobiles(super cars)
 Used in roller coaster in theme park
 Used in Industrial lift
SIGNIFICANCES AND SCOPE

The following are the significances:

 Electromagnetic brakes satisfy all the energy requirements of braking

without the use of friction. They have better heat dissipation capability to
avoid problems that friction brakes faces times.

 They can also be used as a supplementary retardation equipment in

addition to the regular friction brakes on heavy vehicles.

 These brakes’ component cost is less so these brakes are cheap.

 They can be used as an alternative method for the future crisis of the
crude oils.
Block Diagram
The principle of braking in road vehicles involves the conversion of
kinetic energy into thermal energy (heat). When stepping on the brakes, the
driver commands a stopping force several times as powerful as the force
that puts the car in motion and dissipates the associated kinetic energy as
heat. Brakes must be able to arrest the speed of a vehicle in short periods of
time regardless how fast the speed is. As a result, the brakes are required to
have the ability to generating high torque and absorbing energy at
extremely high rates for short periods of time. Brakes may be applied for a
prolonged periods of time in some applications such as a heavy vehicle
descending a long gradient at high speed. Brakes have to have the
mechanism to keep the heat absorption capability for prolonged periods of
time.
CONCLUSION

This braking is more clean way of braking. Wheel skidding is

eliminated as the wheel does not get locked. It is very suitable
for high speed. It works on the electricity and takes up very
little amount of power for a small time period. It only
Consumes small space hence installation is easy. It can be used
effectively to replace typical braking systems..
FUTURE SCOPE

Electromagnetic brakes have numerous preferences over frictional slowing

mechanism. The blend of swirl present and attractive powers makes this brake more
successful. This brake is often utilized as assistant stopping mechanism in vehicle.
The use of abs is often dismissed by utilizing a smaller scale controlled
electromagnetic framework. It is often utilized as a neighborhood of rail mentors to
decelerate the prepare occupation fast. Mixture of these brakes expands the brake
life and act like completely stacked brakes. These brakes are often utilized as a part
of wet condition, so there's no utilization of against slipping instrument .it is
completely electrically controlled which brings about fewer mishaps. The braking
power delivered during this brake isn't the maximum amount because the plate
brakes. Subsequently, it is often utilized as an auxiliary or crisis slowing mechanism
within the autos.
