IT’S A VUCA WORLD!


Where does VUCA come from?
VUCA was first introduced as an idea in the late
1980's by the US Army War College who used the
concept to develop strategic leaders.
In 1991, Herbert Barber officially used the term in
his article in the Journal of Management
Development titled, “Developing strategic
leadership: The US Army War College experience.”
where he stated that the college derived these ideas
from the book of Warren Bennis and Burt Namus
Leaders: The Strategies for Taking Charge.
It was established that the war college
decided to use the VUCA acronym as a
way to help their students (typically
senior military officers) characterise the
turbulent times they would face as they
progressed into strategic roles. In
military context, the acronym was used
primarily to mark the early situation in
Afghanistan at that time, which was
hard to predict.
The idea of VUCA was soon picked up by
the civilian community who began to
realise that elements of VUCA also applied
to the volatile markets and difficult
conditions that businesses often face. The
VUCA concept began being applied to
boardroom discussions where it influenced
decision making and was used as a
method of understanding where there was
a lack of predictability and so helping
improve business performance.
What is VUCA?
The pandemic CoViD-19 has opened new realities about the
new world that every learner is to and will live with. It is also
the new world of work that awaits them. To describe it, it is
volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA).

V It is volatile as change is rapid and unpredictable


in its nature and context. Almost everything changes rapidly,
almost everything is becoming dependent to technology.
U It is uncertain as our present condition is unclear
because of the rapid changes that are happening in almost
everything, and thus the future is uncertain.
C It is complex as many different, interconnected factors
come into play, with the potential to cause chaos and
confusion.
A It is ambiguous as there is lack of clarity or
awareness about a situation.
WHAT IS THE REALITY?
A VUCA environment can:

1. Destabilize people and make them anxious.


(Ginugulo ang tao at ginagawa silang balisa)
2. Sap their motivation (Panghinaan ng loob)
3. Thwart their career moves (Pigilan ang
kanilang plano)
4. Make constant retraining and reshaping a
necessity (Gawing isang pangangailangan ang
patuloy na muling pagsasanay at paghubog)

the future.

sense of purpose and lead people towards it.

✔ BELIEF- In yourself and others, supported


by facts and evidence.

✔ FOCUS- ensure your team’s efforts are


aligned and focused on the right areas.

✔ every learner is taught to pause to listen and look around to

response to VUCA’s elements.

status quo in your organization every day.

from- their hopes, fears and desires.

Fight AMBIGUITY with AGILITY


✔ every learner is taught to observe flexibility, adaptability, and
agility. S/he must plan ahead but build in contingency time and
be prepared to alter plans as events unfold.
CHARACTERISTICS OF AGILITY
✔ DECISIVENESS- adapt quickly to changing
circumstances and make decisions with confidence.

✔ INNOVATE-learn from your mistakes and


continuously seek new ways to get better
at what you do.

✔ EMPOWER- value networks over


hierarchy, collaboration over control and
set people free to do great work.
THE ANTIDOTE

The VUCA world requires every learner to be a


lifelong learner.
It does NOT require frontloading of information to
learners, but it requires them develop their natural
curiosity that leads to personal growth
and development in recognition that NOT
ALL learning comes from the classroom. In this way,
they are prepared to individually thrive (to grow, develop,
and become successful) amidst the new world’s volatility,
uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.
