Oral Communication
Module 4
Target

Speaking is a communication skill that serves five functions or

purposes in the society. Functions of communication refer to the reasons for
communicating with other people such as regulation and control, social
interaction, motivation, information and emotional expression. Behaviors of
individuals are controlled and regulated when they receive oral instructions.
When they speak with one another in meaningful conversations, they are able
to interact and consequently share information. Motivations and emotions are
also made concrete by using certain words.

In your previous lessons, you were able to learn and explain the
functions, nature and process of communication, differentiated the various
models of communication and you even used various strategies in order to
avoid communication breakdown.

This module will provide you the skills in examining sample oral activities
through the functions or purposes of communication, which will be
immediately useful in many areas of your life, since communication is
something we do practically all the time.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Examine sample oral communication activities.

Before going on, check how much you know about this
topic. Answer the questions on the next page in a
separate sheet of paper.

FUNCTIONS/PURPOSES OF
COMMUNICATION

1. Regulation/ Control is used by a speaker for the purpose of moving

another person to act, to move in the particular direction the speaker
wants that person to move. It commonly commands, controls and
regulates.

Examples:

a. Making an announcement that the community will segregate their

garbage.
b. Doctors’ Prescription to “Take your medicine 3 times a day.”
c. Parents’ Instruction to their child “Wash the dishes now, or else I
won’t allow you to go to the party later.”
d. Friends giving advice on what to do, “Move on. He doesn’t love you
anymore”

“Segregate
your
garbage. “

2. Social Interaction is the most familiar and the primary reason why
people communicate. It is used to produce social relationships; used to
develop bonds, intimacy, relations, used to express preferences,
desires, needs, wants, decisions, goals, and strengths; used for giving
and getting information. It is a casual or informal conversation.
Example: A mother talking to her children while they are playing.
Marriage Proposal “Will you marry me?”
Invitation “Would you like some coffee, tea, or me?”

“We will
be going
to the
mall after
you play.”

3. Motivation as a function of communication tries to persuade another

person to change his/ her opinion, attitude or behavior.
Example: A business man showing money as his motivation to do good and
to become successful in his career.

“I’ll always do
good to earn
money and
become
successful,
you too.”

5
4. Information is the most useful function of communication that allows the
speaker to make others aware or informed of certain data, concepts and
processes.
Example: A pharmacist giving information to the elder about the
medicine she purchased.

“Madam, this
is Paracetamol.
It is a pain
reliever, so, it’s
good for your
headache.”

5. Emotional Expression as a function of communication means being able

to use language, gestures and emotions to manage individual or group
activities. The speaker requests or appeal, giving thanks, praising, asking for
an apology, and other expressions of emotions like happy, sad, angry and
others
Example:

Please spare us a
little for food.
