Why Do We Need a Universal

Joint?
Eccentric Motion of Pump
Inherent in design
Twisted helical gear set
Rotor follows eccentric path of stator
Pin Joint Design
• “Rocking Pin” is the most common
PC Universal Joint
• Simple in design
Open Pin Design
Sealed Pin Design
Gear Joint Design
• Crown tooth coupling
• Thrust Plate for axial load
• Sealed to maintain lubricant
Gear Joint Design
Joint Comparison
• Pin Joint Advantage
– Simple in Design
– Easy to assemble and disassemble
– Can use product as lubricant

• Pin Joint Disadvantage

– Limited load carrying capability
– All components wear
Joint Comparison
• Gear Joint Advantages
– Can handle heavy loading
– Replacement of wear components

• Gear Joint Disadvantages

– Requires lubrication and seal
– More complex assembly

Compressive Stress

Defined as the stress along the bearing surface,

or surface of contact, for the two “contacting”
members, whether it is a curved surface against
curved surface (such as the pin on the drive
shaft/rotor head or the gear ball on the thrust
plate) or a curved surface against a flat surface
(such as the pin in the connecting rod hole).
This holds true for a line or a surface.
Joint Comparison
• Loading on the Pin Joint Surfaces
– Torque-Point contact between pin and
connecting rod
– Thrust-Line contact between pin and
connecting rod
– Combined-Line contact between the pin and
the rotor/driveshaft head
– ALL LOADS THROUGH PIN & HEAD

Joint Comparison
• Gear Joint has much lower stress
– Spreads Radial Load over gear teeth
– Spreads Axial Load over thrust plate surface
• Pin Joint has point and line contacts
– Pin has to carry both Radial and Axial Load
– Point & Line Contact stress is infinite, can only
be calculated at some depth
– By nature causes stress cracking

Conclusion
• The compressive stresses resulting from the separated forces
within a gear-type universal joint are significantly lower than
the combined forces at the component interfaces within a pin-
type universal joint.
• Lower stresses prevent rapid deterioration of components and
extend equipment life … more durable.
• Low stress that is well below the allowable limit reduces the
risk of catastrophic failure in applications where conditions are
harsh and tend to fluctuate … more reliable.
• Under the higher inherent stresses of the pin-type universal
joint, the selection of metals, their surface finish, and the
hardness of all pin joint components are critical to achieving
any service life.
