The Nervous System: An

Overview of Its Parts and

Functions
RICAFRENTE, ROSELYN B.
What is the Nervous
System?
 The nervous system is a
sophisticated network of cells,
tissues, and organs that enables
communication and coordination
between different parts of the body.
 It plays a crucial role in regulating
bodily functions, processing
information, and allowing us to
interact with the world around us.

o Central Nervous System (CNS)
-Comprised of the brain and spinal cord, it serves as the command center
for the entire nervous system.

Parts of the Nervous System
o Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
-Consists of nerves that extend from the CNS to various parts of the body,
connecting them to the central command.

Neurons: Building Blocks of the Nervous
System
 Neurons are specialized cells  Neurons work together to form
responsible for transmitting complex neural networks that
electrical and chemical signals enable communication and
throughout the nervous system.. information processing.

 They consist of three main parts:

cell body, dendrites (receive
signals), and axons (transmit
signals).

Communication
Synapses are tiny gaps between neurons where information is
transmitted through chemical signals called neurotransmitters.

These neurotransmitters bridge the gap, allowing signals to be

transmitted from one neuron to the next, facilitating

communication. PRESENTATION TITLE 9
Keep in mind: Nervous system is a remarkable
and intricate system that enables communication
and coordination throughout the body. It consists
of the central nervous system (brain and spinal
cord) and the peripheral nervous system
(nerves).The CNS controls higher-order
functions, while the PNS connects the CNS to
various body parts. Neurons and synapses are the
fundamental units that facilitate communication
within the nervous system.
