MAN MADE IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT

 Pollution: is defined as the introduction into the environment of substances that

don't normally belong there, which, in great enough concentrations, can have

harmful effects on plants, animals, and human being. Examples of types of

pollution are:

 Land pollution

 Water pollution

 Air pollution

 Noise pollution
 ETC

Causes of land pollution:

 Deforestation and soil erosion

 Agricultural activities
 Mining activities
 Industrial activities
 Overcrowded landfill
 Domestic activities
 etc

 1. Deforestation and soil erosion: Deforestation carried

out to create dry lands is one of the major concerns.
Land that is once converted into a dry or barren land, can
never be made fertile again, whatever the magnitude of
measures to redeem it are. Land conversion, meaning
the alteration or modification of the original properties of
the land to make it use-worthy for a specific purpose is
another major cause. This hampers the land immensely.
Also there is a constant waste of land. Unused available
land over the years turns barren; this land then cannot be
used. So in search of more land, potent land is hunted
and its indigenous state is compromised with.

2. Agricultural activities: With growing human population, demand for food has
increased considerably. Farmers often use highly toxic fertilizers and pesticides to
get rid of insects, fungi and bacteria from their crops. However with the overuse of
these chemicals, they result in contamination and poisoning of soil. These
chemicals also pollute the land when they are washed into the soil. Pesticides
which are persistent in nature are chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides e.g., DDT,
HCH, heptachlor, endosulfan etc. Residues of these pesticides in soils have long
term effects especially under the temperate conditions and these makes the soil loss
its fertility.

Mining activities: During extraction and mining activities, several land spaces are
created beneath the surface. We constant hear about land caving in; this is nothing but
nature’s way of filling the spaces left out after mining or extraction activity which
destroys the topsoil and contaminates the area with toxic metals and
chemicals. .Example is using of explosives to blow up mines using of machineries
which emits toxic by-products and leaks to the ground . Also galamsey activities
pollute the land.

4. Overcrowded landfills: Each household produces tonnes of garbage each year.

Garbage like aluminium plastic, paper, cloth, wood is collected and sent to the local
recycling unit. Items that cannot be recycled become a part of the landfills that hampers
the beauty of the city and cause land pollution.

5. Industrialization: Due to increase in demand for food, shelter and house, more
goods are produced. This resulted in creation of more waste that needs to be disposed
of. Industrial wastes are the effluents discharged from chemical industries, paper and
pulp mills, textile mills, steel industries, distilleries, refineries, pesticides and fertilizer
industries, pharmaceutical industries, food processing industries, cement industries. To
meet the demand of the growing population, more industries were developed which led
to deforestation. Research and development paved the way for modern technology
which leds to soil contamination.

6. Construction activities: Due to urbanization, large amount of construction

activities are taking place which has resulted in large waste articles like wood, metal,
bricks, plastic that can be seen by naked eyes outside any building or office which is
under construction. Construction uses up forest land. More constructions means
increase in demand for raw materials like timber. This leads to the exploitation and
destruction of forests

EFFECTS OF LAND POLLUTION

 Chemical effects on life: chemical contamination is one of the
biggest threats to the land. Chemicals like plastics, toxins and
wastes seep into the ground and poison it. This leads to loss of
plants that grow in the soil, animal life and create long-term health
problems such as cancer.
 Effects on human health: The land when contaminated with toxic
chemicals and pesticides lead to problem of skin cancer and human
respiratory system . The toxic chemicals can reach our body
through food and vegetables that we eat as they are grown in
polluted soil.

 Environmental impact : When land pollution is bad enough, it leads to a steep

imbalance in the rain cycle which affects a lot of factors . Trees and plants help
balance the atmosphere and without them we are subjected to various concern like ;
global warming the green house effect, irregular rainfall and flash floods among
other imbalances.
 DISTRUCTION OF HABITAT: when the land which is the natural habitat of
plant and animal is polluted, it affect them which lead to loss of biodiversity.
 DECREASE FOOD PRODUCTION: When land is polluted it affects the fertility
of the soil which lead to reduction in food production
 IT HAMPERS THE BEAUTY OF OUR CITIES

WAYS TO REDUCE LAND
POLLUTION
1. People should be educated and made aware of the harmful effects of littering in the
environment.

2. Proper disposal of waste (in the industries ,and in our communities): Creates dumping
ground away from residential areas.

3. Reduce the use of chemicals in agricultural activities: farmers should be encouraged to

use animal manure(organic manure) instead of inorganic manure/fertilizer .Farmers
should be advised to use biological means to control pests instead of using pesticides and
insecticides.

4. Reduce, Re-use and Recycle waste : Reuse any items that you can. Items like clothing,
bottles wrapping papers and shopping bags can be used over and over again, rather than
buying new ones.

5. Mining industries should reclaim or restore the land after they have finished working .
14
6. Re-afforestation.
