WHAT IS CONTEXT

● Context is defined as the social,


cultural, political,historical, and other
related circumstances that surround
the text and form the terms from which
it can be better understood and
evaluated.
WHAT IS CONTEXT

● An inspiration behind the writing of a


text, and often, it leaves clues about the
situation or the reality that served as the
backdrop of the text.
HYPERTEXT

● A nonlinear way to present information


and is usually accomplished using
“links”.
WHAT IS HYPERTEXT?
● Hyper - means above; beyond
● Text- means combination of letter to
transfer a meaning

Hypertext - something that is beyond letters;


more than simple or ordinary texts
According to Ted Nelson..
● Hypertext is a series of chunks
connected by links that offer readers
different pathways.
● It is a non linear or multi linear, non- sequential,
nodal, and allows for the reader’s navigation
control.
HYPERTEXT is when you type a word
and attach a link to that word so that
upon clicking to that word, the reader
is sent to the site attached.
WHY HYPERTEXT?
• In a hypertext system, the reader is
free to navigate information by
exploring the connections provided.

● Hypertext is very different way of presenting


information than the usual
linear form.
WHY HYPERTEXT?
• Text no longer flows in a straight line
through a book.

● It acts as a bridge between two basic,


opposite, and complementing elements that
may be called gender of knowledge
representation: free and shortcut.
INTERTEXT

● Intertextuality has rooted from the


work of a Swiss linguist Ferdinand de
Saussure (1857-1913).
INTERTEXT
● is technically defined as a process of
text development that merges two
more processes such as imitation and
creation in doing a text.
EXAMPLE
The concept of Wonderwoman inspired
the making of Darna.

Superman = Captain Barbel


Intertextuality is said to take place using
four specific methods namely:

1. Retelling - is the restatement of a


story or re-expression of a
narrative.
Example:

1. The main plotline of Disney’s The Lion


King is a take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

2. The structure of James Joyce’s Ulysses


is modeled after Homer’s Odyssey.
2. Quotation - is the method of
directly lifting the exact
statements or set of words from
a text another author has
made.
EXAMPLE:

My sister said, “I need to


do my homeworks.”
3. Allusion - In this method, a
writer or speaker explicitly or
implicitly pertains to an idea or
passage found in another text
without the use of quotation.
EXAMPLE:
"He's a cool guy, but he becomes a
lovesick Romeo every time he's around
her."

*This quotation alludes to the character of


Romeo from William Shakespeare's Romeo and
Juliet, where in Romeo is head-over-heels in
love with Juliet, causing him (and her) to act
impetuously.
EXAMPLE:

"We got a new Einstein in school


today."

*This allusion is to the real-life genius


physicist Albert Einstein and means that
the new student is extremely smart.
4. Pastiche - is a text
developed in a way that it
copies the style or other
properties of another text
without making fun of it
unlike in a parody.
Questions Used to Validate Intertext

1. Are there two or more stories involved?


2. Does the text show a direct or an
indirect connection to
another piece of work?
