Introduction

• The centroid of a plane area is the geometrical centre of the given

area.
• For regular areas, the centroid can be easily located simply by
observation.

Meaning of terms used
• Centroid: it is the geometrical centre of the body.
• Centre of gravity: It is the point through which the resultant weight of the body acts.

W W

• Centre of Mass: It is the point where the entire mass of the rigid body can be assumed to be
concentrated.
• Location of Centroid, centre of gravity (CG) and Centre of mass (CM) for uniform plane lamina is the
Procedure to obtain centroid
• Express the given area as a sum of a number of simple areas. Sometimes a certain
area might have to be subtracted.

• Define the x and y axes, if not already specified in the problem.

• Calculate the area of each individual part. Subtracted areas are to be considered
as negative areas.

• Obtain the coordinates of centroid of each individual part with reference to the
coordinate axes.

• The coordinates of the centroid () is obtained using following formula.
