HOW TO APPROACH

GRAMMAR
REPORTED SPEECH
The purposes of this presentation are:

• To recall the two approaches for teaching Grammar

• To discuss about analysis of each method

 INDUCTIVE APPROACH
Eg.1 Nora said, “I want to be a model.”
Ans: Nora said that she wanted to be a model.
Eg2 Nora said “Can I be a model?”
Ans: Nora wanted to know if she could be a model.
Eg3 Nora said, “I am beautiful.”
Ans: Nora said that she was beautiful.
Eg4 Nora said, “ I can also speak in English very well.”
Ans: Nora said that she could also speak in English very well.
From these examples, the learners become
realize that
• If the sentence type is “statement”, they
have to use the linking word “that”.
• Moreover, they notice by themselves that
they need to change simple present into
simple past.
• They have also to work out that they
need to change “first person pronoun” to
“Third person pronoun”

1. Louis said, “ I go to school every Monday.”

2. Kevin said, “ My mum is sleeping in the bedroom.”
3. Tara said, “ My Kpop idol is Lisa.”
4. “Louis, you are my best friend.” Tara said.
5. J Mie said, “ I have eaten my lunch when my father come back home.”
6. “He will visit the Grandmother’s house on holidays,”he said.

• At this time, learners have to make a small talk in

pairs. And make the presentation about their friend
talked to the class.
 DEDUCTIVE APPROACH
Eg.1 Nora said, “I want to be a model.”
RULES FOR “REPORTED SPEECH” Ans: Nora said that she wanted to be a
model.

• If the sentence type is “statement”, use the linking word Eg2 Nora said, “I am beautiful.”
“that”. Ans: Nora said that she was beautiful.

• Change “first person pronoun” to “Third person pronoun” Eg3 Nora said, “ I can also speak in
English very well.”
• Change simple present into simple past. Ans: Nora said that she could also speak
in English very well.
