The Definition of Noun
A noun is a word that names something, such as a person,
place, thing, or idea. In a sentence, nouns can play the role of
subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement,
object complement, appositive, or modifier.
Types of Nouns
In English grammar, there 11 types of nouns, such as:
1. Proper noun
Proper noun is the name of a particular person or place. That is used to specify
a particular person, place, animal, thing, etc. A proper noun always begins with
a capital letter.

2. Common noun
This is a noun that refers to a generic item, group, or place. This means that,
unlike proper nouns, they are not used to identify specific people, places, or
objects. Common nouns are not capitalized unless they appear at the beginning
of a sentence.

3. Concrete noun
A concrete noun is something that is perceived by the senses; something that is

4. Abstract noun
An abstract noun is something that cannot be perceived by the senses.

5. Collective noun
A collective noun denotes a group or collection of people or things.

6. Compound noun
Compound noun is a noun made of two or more words.

7. Countable noun
Countable noun can be singular or plural and can be used with numbers and modifiers
like a/an, the, some, any, a few, and many.

8. Uncountable noun
Uncountable nouns are things that we can’t easily separate and count.

9. Material noun
The names used to mention materials or substances which are made up of and
can be perceived by our senses are material nouns. Material nouns are
uncountable.

10. Possessive noun


A possessive noun is a noun that’s followed by an apostrophe (’) and the letter
“s” to indicate possession.

11. Singular noun and plural noun


 A singular noun refers to one person, place, thing, or idea and requires a
singular verb.
 A plural noun refers to more than one person, place, thing, or idea and
requires a plural verb.
The Examples
1. Proper noun
• Does Tina have much homework to do this evening?
• I would like to visit Japan next week.

2. Common noun
• The girls took a trip to Goa.
• Where can I find a restaurant?

3. Concrete noun
• I heard the doorbell.
• My keyboard is sticky.

• We can’t imagine the courage it took to do that.
• The freedom struggle of India is known to the world.

5. Collective noun
• The team is not doing well this season.
• That pack of lies is disgraceful.

6. Compound noun
• I can’t handle the heartbreak of losing a pet.
• Linda and her friends want to eat ice cream after the class.

7. Countable noun
• Here is a cat.
• Here are a few cats.

8. Uncountable noun
• Students don’t seem to have much homework these days.
• Could you help me move the furniture into the other room?

9. Material noun
• He spread some honey on his bread.
• We brought home two bags of rice.

10. Possessive noun


• My father’s house.
• This place is smaller than my parents’ house but much bigger than my sister’s apartment.

The Definition of Pronoun
A pronoun is a word that use to refer to someone or something
when we do not need to use a noun, often because the person or
thing has been mentioned earlier. It substitutes the noun in a
paragraph or piece of writing to avoid repetition of the noun.
Pronouns can be used in singular and plural forms. The verb used in
the sentence should be used in accordance with the particular form
of the pronoun used.
Types of Pronouns
1. Personal pronouns
Personal pronouns refer to a specific person or thing. Their form changes to indicate a person,
number, gender, or case. Personal pronouns divided into three parts, such as:
• Subjective personal pronouns are pronouns that act as the subject of a sentence. The
subjective personal pronouns are I, you, she, he, it, you, and they.

• Objective personal pronouns are pronouns that act as the object of a sentence. The
objective personal pronouns are me, you, her, him, it, us, you, and them.

• Possessive personal pronouns are pronouns that show possession. They define a person (or
a number of people) who owns a particular object. The possessive personal pronouns
are mine, yours, hers, his, its, ours, and theirs.
Types of Pronouns
2. Demonstrative pronouns
Demonstrative pronouns point to and identify a noun or a pronoun. This and these refer to
things that are nearby in space or time, while that and those refer to things that are farther
away in space or further away in time.

3. Interrogative pronouns
Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions. The interrogative pronouns
are who, whom, which, and what.

4. Relative pronouns
Relative pronouns are used to link one phrase or clause to another phrase or clause. The
relative pronouns are who, whom, that, and which. The compounds whoever, whomever,
and whichever are also commonly used relative pronouns.

5. Indefinite pronouns
Indefinite pronouns refer to an identifiable, but not specified, person or thing. An indefinite
pronoun conveys the idea of all, any, none, or some. Indefinite pronouns are all, another, any,
anybody, anyone, anything, each, everybody, everyone, everything, few, many, nobody,
none, one, several, some, somebody, and someone.

6. Reflexive pronouns
Reflexive pronouns refer back to the subject of the clause or sentence. Reflexive pronouns are
myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves.

7. Intensive pronouns
Intensive pronouns are used to emphasize their antecedent. Intensive pronouns are identical in
form to reflexive pronouns.

1. Personal pronouns
 Subjective personal pronouns
• I walked directly to the party.
• She was annoyed.

 Objective personal pronouns


• He pointed to the pedestrians and said to be careful of them.
• The police officer said there are a lot of speedy motorists like us.

 Possessive personal pronouns


• All the books are mine.

• Nobody's house has as many books as theirs, not even ours.

• This is the dress I will wear; that is the one I wore yesterday.
• That is not true.

3. Interrogative pronouns
• Which is the best restaurant?
• What did he tell you?

4. Relative pronouns
• Whoever added the bill made a mistake.
• The waiter who served us doesn't know how to add.

• Everybody got lost on the way there.

• Somebody forgot to bring the map.

6. Reflexive pronouns
• She baked a cake for herself.

• We decided to eat it ourselves.

7. Intensive pronouns
• They themselves think everyone should know about the news.

• You yourself should tell everyone how great the scenery is.
The Conclusion
In conclusion, a noun is a word that names something, such as a person, place,
thing, or idea. There are 11 types of nouns, such as proper noun, common
noun, concrete noun, abstract noun, collective noun, compound noun,
countable noun, uncountable noun, material noun, possessive noun, singular
and plural noun.
A pronoun is a word that we use to refer to someone or something, a pronoun is
also used in the place of a noun. There are 7 types of pronouns, namely
personal pronoun, demonstrative pronoun, interrogative pronoun, relative
pronoun, indefinite pronoun, reflexive pronoun, and intensive pronoun.
