INTRODUCTION TO
DIRECTION
Direction is an important managerial function that
initiates action.

It is a connecting and activating link between various


functions of management.

It is a process around which all performance revolves.

It is the inter personal aspect of management which


deals with guiding, influencing and motivating the
employees.
MEANING OF DIRECTION
According to William Newman “Directing deals with
the steps a manager takes to get subordinates and
others to carry out plans ”,Everything a manager does
is included in direction.

“Direction is a complex function that includes all those


activities which are designed to encourage
subordinates to work efficiently and effectively.”

According to Ernest Dale, “Direction is telling people


what to do and seeing that they do it to the best of
their ability.”
ELEMENTS OF DIRECTION
1. Communication

The manager issues orders and

to get work done from them. He
Must ensure that the subordinates
understand his instructions. Besides
This, the manager has also to

the workers as to how to perform
their jobs.
2. LEADERSHIP
By performing this function, the
manager guides and influences
the work of his subordinates.
It is the quality of behavior
of a manager where by he
guides subordinates in the
desired direction. The manager
should try to achieve the cooperation
of the subordinates.
3. MOTIVATION

Motivation means inspiring the


subordinates with a zeal to work for
the accomplishment of organizational
objectives. The manager should motivate
the subordinate to work for
the achievement of organizational
goals. Various kinds of incentives
may be used to enthuse the
workers.
4. SUPERVISION

Every manager supervises his


subordinates .he covers their
performance to ensure
productivity and quality and
avoid wastage of time and
effort.
NATURE OF DIRECTION

1. Direction is Concerned with Human Factor :


It is a interpersonal aspect of management. by
performing this function the manager is able to influence
the behavior of subordinates and get things done
through them.

2. Direction is a Continuous Function:


It is a continuous activity .A manager cannot just rest
after issuing orders and instructions. He must guide,
supervise and motivate his subordinates.
3. Direction is a Pervasive function:

Direction is a pervasive function of management.


It needs to be performed at every level of
management.

4. Direction is a link between Planning and


Control:
Direction helps in putting plans into practice and
paves the way for controlling of operations
.
5. Direction is oriented towards Performance

Direction is oriented towards performance .All


performance revolves around this function. It
is a essence of managing .As a creative
function ,direction converts plans into
performance.
IMPORTANCE OF DIRECTION
1.Action is Initiated:
All the activities of any enterprise are initiated
when the direction function is performed. It is the
direction that initiates actions.

2.Organisational goals are achieved:


Direction is the function of guiding the
subordinates to work towards the accomplishment
of organizational objective.
3. Efficiency is Ensured:

The direction involves training and guiding of the


subordinates and also their supervision. This
enhances their efficiency.

4. Changes are facilitated :


Direction facilitates the introduction of changes in
the organization .Employees generally have a
tendency to resist change. If they are informed
about the change properly, it will be easier to
implement change.
5. Better Human Relations are Achieved

Directing deals with human factor, so it is


a very delicate .In order to achieve the
cooperation of workers, it is essential
to understand their nature and needs.
Financial and Non-financial incentives may
be provided to the workers to satisfy their
needs.

SUPERVISION
Supervision means overseeing
the subordinates at work. It is a
important part of direction
function of every manager . It
means observing the
subordinates at work to see that
they are working according to
plans and policies of the
organization and keeping the
time schedule and to help them
in solving their work problems.
POSITION OF SUPERVISOR

Position of supervisor in the organizational structure


SUPERVISOR
A Supervisor is a person who is
primarily in charge of a section
and its employees. He is
responsible for both the
quantity and quality of
production, for the efficient
performance of the equipment
and for the employees in his
charge and their
efficiency ,training and morale.

He should have sufficient technical skill to perform the jobs


to be supervised to get output of better quality from the
subordinates.
