Dividing a Polynomial by a Monomial
To divide a polynomial by a monomial, divide each term of
the polynomial by the monomial:

ab a b
  ( c  0 ).
c c c
23 2 3
Examples:   and
7 7 7
n  5p n 5p

Example: Divide a Polynomial by a
Monomial (1 of 4)
Divide 6 y 5  10 y 3 by 2 y 2 .

6 y 5  10 y 3 6 y 5 10 y 3
2    3 y 3
 5y

2y 2

2 y 3 y 3  5 y   6 y  10 y
2 5 3
Check:

Because division by 0 is undefined, the quotient

5 3
6 y  10 y
2 y2
is undefined if y = 0. From now on, we assume that no
denominators are 0.
