Study the table below: The Simple Tenses of Verbs PRESENT TENSE tells what is going on right now. The present form shows action or a state of being that is occurring now, that is generally true, or that is always happening. PRESENT TENSE The simple present is used with adverbs like: always often usually sometimes rarely everyday
To form the Simple Present Tense, we add -s or –es
for a singular subject. The verb is in the base or simple form if the subject is plural. Present Tense Example:
Sherry sings our national anthem.
They sing the national antem.
The Simple Tenses of Verbs PAST TENSE tells you what happened before the present time. PAST TENSE The simple past tense is used with the following words: yesterday last night last week
a month ago two years ago
To form the Simple Past Tense, we add –d or –
ed. Past Tense Example:
We played at the park yesterday.
I visited my sister last night.
The Simple Tenses of Verbs FUTURE TENSE talks about what has not happened yet or what will happen in the future. This simple future tense is the only one that always needs helping verbs to express meaning. FUTURE TENSE
The simple future tense is used with the following
words: tomorrow in future year next month this week someday
To form the Simple Future Tense we add will with
the base or simple form of the verb. Future Tense Example:
We will watch a movie tomorrow.
She will clean her room this week.
Remember: The three simple tenses of verbs are present tense, past tense and future tense.
Present tense means an action is currently going on.
Past tense means an action has already happened.
Future tense means an action has not yet happened.
