Law of Acceleration

ENGAGE
Imagine that you and your friend
joined a Track and field sport and your
weight is 50 kg while your friend is 40
kg. Who among you will reach the
finish line first?
OBJECTIVE
• Explain the Law of Acceleration
• Cite situations where acceleration
is involved.
• Solve problems involving
acceleration.
WHAT YOU OBSERVE?
TO REMEMBER!
•The two factors that affect the acceleration
are the force and mass.

Law of Acceleration
•If a net force is acting on an object, It will accelerate
in the direction of the net force. The magnitude of
the acceleration is directly proportional to the net
force and inversely proportional to the object’s mass.
Formula in Law of Acceleration
• F=m x a
Wherein:
• F – force (N= 1 kg)
• m – mass (Kg),
• a – acceleration (9.8 m/s^2)

• Answer:
Let’s try to solve this problem
using GRESA.
1. An object with a mass of 12 kg is observed to accelerate
at the rate of 4 m/s^2. Calculate the force required to
produce this acceleration

2. A 1.3 kg book rests on a table. How much force is it

exerting on the table?

3. Refer to the Newton 2nd law of motion problems with

solutions: A softball has a mass of 1.5 kg and hits the
catcher's glove with a force of 30 N? What is the
acceleration of the softball?
ANSWERS
1.
• Given: m=12 kg, a= 4 m/s^2
• Required: F?
• Equation: F= mxa
• Solution: F= (12 kg) (4m/s^2) = 48
• Answer: 48 N
2.
• Given: m=1.3 kg, a= 9.8 m/s^2
• Required: F?
• Equation: F= mxa
• Solution: F= (1.3 kg) (9.8 m/s^2) = 12.74
• Answer: 12.74 N
3.
• Given: m=1.5 kg, F= 30 N
• Required: F?
• Equation: a= F/m
• Solution: F= (30N)/(1.5 kg) = 20
• Answer: 20 m/s^2
