Power legitimized through a legal
document like the Philippine
Constitution discussed above is an
example of Rational-Legal Authority.
Power derived from rules and
regulations that are enacted legally.
This type of authority exists because of an
organization called bureaucracy. Hence, it is
also referred to as bureaucratic authority.

customs and traditions.
This is a type of authority found
mostly in pre-modern or pre-
industrial societies, where values
and beliefs are shared by virtually
everyone in the society.
 Rulers are not elected to positions of authority
nor are the society’s members given choices
on the person they want to rule over them.
 At the level of families, there is such thing as
traditional authority even in modern
societies, one that is exercised by parents over
their children.
 In both pre-modern as well as industrial
societies, parents still have a say over the
behavior of their children for as long as they
live under one roof.
CHARISMATIC AUTHORITY
A power legitimized by a person’s
extraordinary qualities that convince
others to follow him or her despite great
adversities.
History is replete with charismatic
persons who have moved others to drop
whatever they’re doing, change their
beliefs and follow the charismatics
leader.
