DEFINITION
• असञ्चार्यो मुखे पूर्णे गण्डू षःकवलोऽन्यथा As.Hr. Su. 22
• मुख़े सञ्चार्यते या तु सा मात्रा कवलः स्मृतः|
असञ्चारा तु या मात्रा स गण्डू षः प्रकीर्तितः| As. Sa. SU. 31
Filling the mouth completely , not permitting any movement inside
is gandusha. Kavala is otherwise
The quantity which moves in the mouth freely is called kavala and
that which does not move is gandusha

Advantages of Gandusha
हन्वोर्बलं स्वरबलं वदनोपचयः परः|
स्यात् परं च रसज्ञानमन्ने च रुचिरुत्तमा||७८|
न चास्य कण्ठशोषः स्यान्नौष्ठयोः स्फु टनाद्भयम्|
न च दन्ताः क्षयं यान्ति दृढमूला भवन्ति च||७९||
न शूल्यन्ते न चाम्लेन हृष्यन्ते भक्षयन्ति च|
परानपि खरान् भक्ष्यांस्तैलगण्डू षधारणात्||८० Ch. Su. 5

• Provides strength to the Jaws - hanvorbala
• Increase the power of voice- swarabala
• Develops the corpulence and shining of face and cheeks- vadanopachaya
• Increases the taste perception- rasajnana
• Good taste for food- ruchiruthama
• Doesn’t afflicts dryness of mouth and throat- kantha and oshta shosha
• Need not worried about cracking in the lips- sphutana
• Decay of teeth will be arrested – dantha kshaya

• Moreover teeth becomes firm rooted- drudamula
• Toothache will not occur- shula
• Doesn’t arise the question of oversensitivity by taking sour substances-
amlena hrushyanthe bhakshayanthi cha
• Able to eat even hardest food substances- khara

4 TYPES- AS. HR. SU. 22
• Snigdha – indicated in vitiation of vata
• Shamana – in pitta
• Shodhana- in Kapha
• Ropana – vranaghna

• Snigdha gandusha – with Sneha processed with drugs having Madhura,
amla, lavana rasa
• Shamana gandusha by oushadha with Tikta, Kashaya, Madhura rasa
Dravya
• Shodhana gandusha by tikta katu amla patu and ushna veerya
• Ropana by Kashaya, tikta Dravya

• Dantachala
• Vatika Mukharoga
in these conditions sukhoshna or sheeta jala can be used when mixed with
tila kalka
For daily use – tila taila or mamsa rasa can be used

kshate,viha,kshara,agni,dagdhe
• Madhu gandusha -asya vaishadhya, mukha vrunansandadhati, daha, trushna
prashamana
• Dhanyamla gandusha -asya vairasya,mala,dourgandhya nashayati
Same Without salt and made sheetha allevites mukhashosha
• Ksharaambu gandusha – shleshma chaya
• Sukoshnodaka gandusha - vaktra laghava

Dharana kala
• कफपूर्णास्यता यावत्स्रवद्घ्राणाक्षताऽथवा according to ashtanga Hridaya

Till mouth gets filled with kapha or


Till there are secretions from nose and eyes

Procedure
• निवाते सातपे स्विन्नमृदितस्कन्धकन्धरः||१०||
गण्डू षमपिबन् किञ्चिदुन्नतास्यो विधारयेत्| As. Hr.22
• When the sun is shining and the day is devoid of breeze after fomenting and massaging the
shoulders and neck keeping his face slightly raised one should retain the liquid in his mouth

• अथ निवाते सातपे सुख़ोपविष्टस्तन्मनाः स्विन्नमृदितगलकपोलललाटदेशो वर


मध्यावरां क्रमाद्वक्त्रार्धत्रिभागचतुर्भागपूरणीं द्रवमात्रां कल्कं वा कोलप्रमाणं कि
ञ्चिदुन्नमितास्योऽनभ्यवहरन् धारयेत्|
कवले तु पर्यायेण कपोलौ कण्ठं च सञ्चारयेत्|
अयमेव च कवलगण्डू षयोर्विशेषः| AS. Sa. 31

प्रसेककण्ठामयवक्त्रशोषाः|
हृल्लासतन्द्रारुचिपीनसाश्च
साध्या विशेषात्कवलग्रहेण||१२||

Types according to Sushruta
• Snehika –oil , ghee – vataja conditions – snighda and ushna
• Shodhana- katu, amla, lavana ruksha and ushna – kapha conditions
• Prasadana- Madhura, sheeta - in pitta conditions
• Ropana – Kashaya , tikta , Madhura and katu , ushana – vrana ropana
