FINDING

DIFFERENCE OF LONGITUDE
AND
LONG. IN
DIFFERENCE OF LONGITUDE

 Is the shorter arc of the

equator included between the
meridians of two places
LONGITUDE FROM (Long Fr.) – is
the longitude of the place where
the ship will leave or depart

LONG IN (Long In)- is the

longitude where the ship will
arrive
Addition or subtraction starts
with the number of seconds,
followed by the number of
minutes, and then the number of
degrees.
RULE 1:
If longitude from and longitude in have the same name
(E,E/W,W) SUBTRACT the smaller from the greater.
Name the difference of latitude as follows:

 if Long from is greater than Long in, the D. Long will be

named contrary
If Long in is greater that Long fr, the D.lat will be
named the same
Example :

A vessel sailed from Longitude

150° 25’ 35” E and arrived in
Longitude 130° 30’ 45” E.
Calculate for the difference of
longitude made by the vessel.
If Long from and Long in have Unlike
names (E,W/W,E), ADD, Name the
difference of long after the Long in.
BUT!
• If the Difference of Longitude
exceeds 180°, subtract it from 360°.
Result will be the new Difference of
Longitude which will be named
contrary to the first D.Lo found in
the usual way.
Example 1:

•Calculate for the difference

of longitude between
Longitude 05° 45’ 50” E and
Longitude 15 ° 30’ 45” W.
Example 2:

•A vessel sailed from Longitude

150° 48’ 50” E to Longitude
165°46’25” W. Calculate for the
difference of longitude made
by the vessel.
RULES IN FINDING LONGITUDE IN
RULE 1:
• If longitude from and the Difference of longitude in
have the same name (E,E/W,W) ADD. Name the
Longitude In the same as their name.

• If Longitude In exceeds 180°, subtract it from 360 °.

Result will be the new Longitude IN and it is to be
named contrary to the first Longitude In found in
the usual way.
RULES IN FINDING LONGITUDE IN

RULE 1:
•If longitude from and the Difference
of longitude in have the same name
(E,E/W,W) ADD. Name the
Longitude In the same as their
name.
Example 1:

•A ship will depart in Longitude 25 °

34’ 50” E. What will be her
longitude of arrival if she is to steam
for 30°40’30” eastward?
Example 2:

•A vessel sailed from Longitude

•160 ° 30’ 50” E, making a difference
of Longitude 34 ° 40’ 45” to the
east. Calculate for the longitude
arrived by the vessel.
Rule 2:

If Long from and D. Long have

Unlike names (E,W/W,E),
SUBTRACT the smaller from the
greater. Name theLongitude In after
after the greater.
Example 1:

•A vessel departs in Longitude 15 °

40’ 55” W. If she is bound to a place
which is 40 °20’25” east of her
position, in what longitude she will
arrive?
