Introduction
Science may be defined as the system of knowledge of
the natural world gained through the scientific method.
It is also factual. It was originally called "philosophy of
the natural world" since it stemmed from the ancient
Greeks' desire to know about nature. Thus, the first
scientists were called "philosophers of nature."
Introduction
The term technology is derived from Greek words tekhne
which means arts or craft and logos or logia, meaning subject
or interest. When combined, the term comes to mean as
“practical applications of what we know about nature” using
systematic principles for the improvement of human life.
Introduction
This interdisciplinary course engages students to confront the realities
brought about by science and technology in society. Such realities move the
personal, the public, and the global aspects of our living and are integral to
human development. Scientific knowledge and technological development
happen in the context of society with all its socio-political, cultural,
economic and philosophical underpinnings at play. This course seeks to instil
reflective knowledge in the students to enable them to live the good life and
display ethical decision making in the face of scientific and technological
advancement.
Introduction
WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY STS?
1. Understanding the impact of science and
technology on society: STS helps us
understand how scientific and technological
advancements shape our society, culture,
and politics. It allows us to analyze the
positive and negative impacts of these
advancements, and helps us make informed
decisions about how to use them.
2. Promoting critical thinking: STS
encourages critical thinking about the role
of science and technology in society. It helps
us to evaluate the claims made by scientists
and technologists, and to understand the
social, cultural, and economic factors that
shape scientific and technological
developments.
3. Improving communication: STS helps us
communicate more effectively about
science and technology to the general
public. It helps us to understand the public's
perceptions and concerns about science and
technology, and to communicate scientific
and technological information in a way that
is accessible and meaningful to the public.
4. Addressing ethical and social issues:
Science and technology have the potential
to cause significant ethical and social issues.
STS allows us to study and address these
issues, such as privacy, security, and
inequality, and to develop solutions to
them.
5. Encouraging interdisciplinary thinking:
STS is an interdisciplinary field that draws
on the perspectives of the natural sciences,
social sciences, and humanities. By studying
STS, students can learn to think across
different disciplines and to understand the
connections between them.
6. Creating a better future: By studying the
interactions between science, technology
and society, individuals can better
understand the impact their decisions will
have on the future. They can have a better
understanding of how to create a more
sustainable, equitable, and resilient world.

I. General Concepts and
STS Historical Events
• Homo sapiens, (Latin: “wise man”) the species
to which all modern human beings belong.
• Homo is the Latin word for ‘human’ or ‘man’
and sapiens is derived from a Latin word that
means ‘wise’.
• The name Homo sapiens was applied in 1758
by the father of modern biological
classification, Carolus Linnaeus.
• Initially, Homo sapiens made
stone tools such as flakes,
scrapers and points that were
similar in design to those made
by the Neanderthals. This
technology appeared about
250,000 years ago, coinciding
with the probable first
appearance of early Homo
sapiens. It required an ability
for abstract thought to mentally
plan a series of steps that could
then be executed.
I. Ancient Times
• TRANSPORTATION- Barter System
• COMMUNICATION- Cuneiform
• WEAPONS AND ARMORS
A. Sumerian
Civilization
• Cuneiform- one of the major
contributions of Sumerians
-First writing system
-system that made use of pictures and
triangular symbols which are carved on
clay using wedge (sharp-edge)
instruments and then left to dry
A. Sumerian
Civilization
• Uruk City- considered to be the first
true city in the world

-the city was made by

Sumerians using mud or clay from the
river, which they mixed with reeds,
producing sun-baked bricks

-the bricks were used to build houses

and wall around the city to prevent wild
animals and aliens from entering.
A. Sumerian

Civilization
The Great Ziggurat of Ur- aka the
mountain of god

-was also made with sun-baked bricks

-The ziggurat served as the sacred place

of their chief god, where only priests
were allowed to enter.

Civilization
Irrigation and Dikes- Due to growing population, the need for water also
increased. However, they had difficulties in getting water from the rivers thus,
cannot maintain their farmlands. Some residents lack with water while others
get flooded. So, the Sumerians brilliantly created dikes and canals which
helped to provide good water flow to the city.

• Sailboat

• Wheel- the first wheel was not made for transportation but for farm work
and food processes.

Civilization
The plow- technology which would enable to
dig the ground where the seeds would be planted.
- used to dig the land in a fast pace
- As the plow breaks the ground, the farmer
would just drop the seeds and farm work would
already be done.

• Roads- used sun-baked bricks
