LEARNING OUTCOMES
• Discuss the major methods of nutritional assessment and
pick the common ones used nationally.

• Discuss medical nutrition therapy in relation to

hypertension , diabetes and tuberculosis.
Nutrition assessment : Is the process used to evaluate
nutritional status , identify malnutrition and determine which
individuals need nutritional support.
-There are four major assessment areas to determine a
person`s nutritional status:
A- Anthropometric measurements
B- Biochemical or laboratory analysis
C- Clinical evaluation
D- Diet history
ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS
• It involves measuring body weight , height or length
and body mass index.
• It can help to identify malnutrition.
Helps to create more complete picture of a person`s
nutritional status. BMI IS A MEASURE OF BODY FAT
BASED ON HEIGHT AND WEIGHT THAT APPLIES TO
ADULT MEN AND WOMEN
EXAMPLE

BMI= weight (in kg) / height in (in m) / height (in m)

e,g a person weighs 70 kg and has a height of 168cm
What is his BMI?
BMI = 70/1.68/1.68 = 24.8
BMI INTERPRETATION

<16 Severely underweight

16-16.9 Moderately underweight
17-18.4 Mildly underweight
18.5-24.9 healthy weight
25-29.9 Overweight
30-34.9 Mildly obese
35-39.9 Moderately obese
> 40 Severely obese
Dietary assessments
• Used to evaluate a person diet and determine
whether it meets their nutritional needs
• This can be done through dietary history ,food
records.
• It is done 24 hourly dietary recalls or food
frequency.
Medical nutritional therapy in relation to
hypertension
• Reducing sodium intake
• Increasing potassium intake by eating fruits such as
bananas
• Fat free or low fat dairy products.
• Lean protein
• Increasing whole grains and vegetables.
In relation to diabetes
• To help patients learn how to choose and prepare healthy
food such as foods high in fiber and low fat.
• Helps the patient learn how to space their meal and snacks
through the day to keep the blood sugar level stable.
• Teach the patient how to monitor blood sugar level and
adjust their diet accordingly.
In relation to tuberculosis
• Focuses on helping them get the nutrients they need
to regain and maintain a healthy weight
• Helps them to get nutrients they need on food rather
than relaying on food supplements
• To address nutritional deficiencies such as anaemia or
vitamin deficiency (they speed up healing process and
improves overall)
