Mechanical barrier
Act as a barrier between sperm and egg .( male
and female condom ,diaphragm and cervical
cap)

Male condom
It is a sheath-shaped barrier device which is thin,
soft and open at one and closed on the other
Mode of action
It collects semen and forms a barrier
which prevents passage of sperm
into the vagina
How it works
• Only condoms with EC mark(conformite
Europeend) should be used and should be on date
• They should be started away from extremes of
heat ,light and dump
• Be careful when handling to prevent tearing
The condom should be rolled on the erect
penis ,before any genital contact is made (it is
possible for the sperm to be present in the pre-
ejaculation)
• Leave about 1cm of air free at the tip of the
condom for the ejaculation or else it will bust
• Penis should be withdrawn very
soon after ejaculation before it
reduces in side and the condom
became loss
• Should be held in place during
withdrawal of the erect penis so
that it does not slip off
• It should be used once and
dispose it to the bin
NB : it will not flash to the toilet
Advantages of male condoms
• Easy to get and easy to use

with condoms

Female condoms
A tube of soft plastic
(polyurethane)that has a closed end .
Each end has a ring or rim . The ring
at the closed end is inserted into the
women’s vagina over the cervix ,to
hold the tube in place

How is used
The closed inner end is anchored in
place by a polyurethane ring , while
the outer edge lies flat against vulva
• Great care has to be taken to ensure that the
penis is inside the polyurethane sheath and
not wrongly positioned between the condom
and vaginal walls

• It is very expensive
• It needs to be supported during
sexual act
Cervical cap
They are made of rubber and look smaller in
diameter than the diaphragm .They require
fitting at the contraception clinic.

with the strap facing down .You put it 6 hours
before intercourse
