Elevator Emergency
Introduction
A situation arise when sudden power failure/Fire
case/Earthquake/ Technical Error or Shutdown of
elevators initiated manually.
Due to any of the above reason the person
trapped inside the elevator may panic or may get
shock, or in event of fire or earthquake it can cost
the life of the person trapped inside.
A alarm received from any elevator should not be
neglected and must be addressed on priority by
the authorized/trained person.
Who can get trapped in elevators
Anybody using them, e.g.
1) Guest/s,
2) employees,
3) visitors/vendors.
What to do when reported
Incase a guest/ staff is stuck in the elevator.
On receipt of the call Security personnel rushes to
the lobby/ service area of the hotel with the lunar
key and waits for the Engineering staff to arrive.
What to do when reported
Meanwhile Duty manager/ Telephone Operator
call up the guest/ staff and assure the guest/
staff of his/ her safety and inform him/ her that
the rescue team is working on his/ her release
from the elevator.
The stuck elevator car is located by partially
opening the elevator door at the lobby level with
the lunar key and looking up in the elevator shaft.
The Security Officer and Engineering staff then
rushes to the floor where the elevator is stuck.
The door is partially opened to check the level of
the elevator car.
The door is partially opened and the guest/ staff
is reassured by the Security Officer that they
would be released soon. The guest is advised to
stand away from the elevator car door and not to
attempt any forceful opening of the elevator door.

The Guest/ Staff must not be rescued from the


elevator car even if the elevator is in level with the
floor at the landing unless the elevator mains are
switched off.
No attempts must be made by anyone to rescue
guests/ staff from an elevator car stuck at uneven
levels.

SOMETIMES A FATAL ACCIDENT CAN OCCUR


WHEN GUEST/STAFF CAME OUT BY
THEMSELVES AND FALL BACK INTO LIFT SHAFT
The guest/ staff can only be rescued from the
elevator car stuck at uneven levels once the
Engineering staff switches off the elevator from
elevator machine room and manually moves the
elevator to a particular floor level. The level of the
elevator car must be aligned with the level of the
landing and once this is aligned the technician in
the machine room must not attempt to move the
elevator unless he communicates with the
Security Officer and Engineering staff.
The aligning of the elevator car with the landing must be
monitored by the Engineering and Security staff by partially
opening the main door of the landing.
It is imperative that constant communication via cell phone or
radio set with the technician in the elevator machine room be
maintained.
The door is opened with the lunar key and the guest/ staff is
rescued.

After the rescue operation is complete, the guest/ staff are


reassured that the elevator would be checked thoroughly.

The guest must be met by the Duty Manager and Security and
could be offered some water/ refreshing drink after being
rescued.

The Telephone Operator is called up and informed that the


guest/ staff have been rescued from elevator and the situation
