Word Formation Processes
BLENDING- is the word formation
process in which parts of two or more
words combine to create a new word
whose meaning is often a combination of
the original words.
Examples: breakfast + lunch =
brunch
smoke + fog = smog
news + broadcast = newscast
Word Formation Processes
 COMPOUNDING- are formed when two words are joined together
to create a new word with a new meaning.
 Three Types of Compound Words:
1. Open Compound Words – are compound words that are
written with a space between the elements.
For example: hot dog, full moon, swimming pool
(with a space between the elements as in disc jockey, hot dog…)
2. Closed Compound Words – are compound words that are
written without a space.
For example: playground, basketball, birthday
3. Hyphenated Compound Words – are compound words
that are written with the hyphen between the elements.
For example: part-time, mother-in- law, deep-fried
Word Formation Processes
 Clipping – it is a word formation process when a word of
more than one syllable is reduced to a shorter form. It is
called clipping because you “clip off” one part from the
rest.
Examples:
advertisement – ad
gasoline -- gas
telephone – phone
influenza – flu
 Acronyms are formed by taking the initial letters of a phrase
and making a word out of it.
Word Formation Processes
Examples:
ASAP – As Soon As Possible
AWOL – Absent Without Leave
LASER – Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission Of
Radiation
NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration
 FOLK ETYMOLOGY refers to the changing of a word or a phrase over
time which results from the replacement of an unfamiliar form by a
more familiar one.
Examples:
Female from the Old French word “femelle”
Bridegroom from the Old English word “Bryd-guman"
Cockroach from the Spanish word “cucaracha”
