LESSON 5
TYPE OF FUNCTION
There are 4 types of function. These are
the following
• RATIONAL FUNCTION
• INVERSE FUNCTION
• EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
• LOGARITHMIC FUNCTION
RATIONAL FUNCTION
A rational function is any function which
can be written as the ratio of two
polynomial functions. The domain of a
rational function 𝑓(𝑥) = is the set of all
values of x for which the denominator
h(x) is not zero.

INVERSE FUNCTION
An Inverse Function is a function formed
when the independent variable (x) is
exchanged with the dependent variable
(y) in a given relation.
INVERSE FUNCTION
EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
An Exponential function can be written
𝑥
as 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑏 where 𝑏 > 0, 𝑏 ≠ 1, and 𝑥 is any
real number. In the equation 𝑓(𝒙) = 𝒃 , b
is the constant
𝑥 called base and 𝑥 is an
independent variable called the
exponent.
EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
LOGARITHMIC FUNCTION
A logarithmic function is an inverse of an
exponential function and defined
by 𝑙𝑜𝑔 b 𝑦 = 𝑥 if and only 𝑏x = 𝑦 for 𝑏 > 0, 𝑏 ≠
1. A logarithm is an exponent which 𝑏
must have to produce 𝑦. The equations 𝑥
= 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑏𝑦 and 𝑦 = 𝑏
𝑥 are equivalent.
