Name that tool!

To the CORE - Properties of wood
Find a range of different types/pieces of
wood around the room and complete the
following sheet:
Task 1 look at the material and identify
the texture
Task 2 look at the make up of the
material – how big or small are the
pieces/particles
Task 3 use the information on the block
to add detail to your own sheets.
Practical
Being Curious, Reflective and Responsible
continue with using Tools and equipment with Confidence and safely
• Use the work sheet to support your working
• Focus on accuracy
• Focus on attention in using/handling the tools correctly
Step one Check material
You will cut out 3 pieces from this larger piece
Measure – L=200mm x W-52mm x D-10mm Side(s)
• From the LHS measure 200mm place a mark on the wood next to 200mm on the
ruler THEN another mark at 210mm
• Use your Try square now
• Now measure another 200mm from the last line you drew.
• Make another mark at 210mm again Use your Try square again
• Make another mark at 100mm from the last line you drew
• Use your Try square again

Step two • Now draw all around your PINE material connecting all the lines around the piece.
• Collect a Tenon Saw and a Bench Hook and cut BETWEEN the LINES
• Cut all 3 pieces
Collect tools:
Step three • Collect Goggles and take your pieces to the Sanding machine
Safety & • Sand your material until you reach the line you marked earlier. NO FURTHER • Tenon Saw
Quality control • Safety and Accuracy here is important • Try square
• Steel rule
Step four • Measure down from the small width end ( W-52mm) 60 mm on the steel rule put a
mark on the pine wood. • Bench hook
• Draw a line through the mark using your try square
• Using the steel rule Measure along this line 26mm put a mark (under tables)
• This will become a hole
• Repeat this on the other piece.

Step five Go to the Pillar Drill –

• Open the guard (orange) collect the chuck key
• Change the Drill bit using the chuck key to 25mm Forstner bit
• Tighten back the chuck _ check this again (ask teacher)
