STATUS SCALE
FORMALITY SCALE
REFERENTIAL AND AFFECTIVE SCALES
DEFINITION
Status scale points to the relevance of relative status in some
linguistic choices. Formality scale is useful in assessing the
influence of the social setting or type of interaction on language
choice. Language can convey objective information of a
referential kind, and it can also express how someone is feeling.
EXAMPLE
The status scale in sociolinguistics measures the relationship between participants based on their social
status, with high status individuals seen as superior and low status individuals as subordinate. It's one of
five scales used to measure language's social dimensions, alongside social distance, formality, and
functional (referential and affective) scales. Factors like wealth, occupation, and social class influence
one's position on the status scale, highlighting how language use is shaped by social factors.
Understanding this scale is crucial for comprehending the impact of social dynamics on language usage.
There are five levels (or registers) of formality: Intimate,
Casual, Formal, Frozen, and Consultative. Each of them is
characterised by a different register of the English language
and is suitable in different social contexts.

DEFINITION
The formality scale in sociolinguistics evaluates language
formality levels, ranging from high to low formality. It's useful
for understanding how social settings and interactions
influence language use. Levels include intimate, casual,
consultative, formal, and frozen. Each level corresponds to
EXAMPLE specific social contexts, with formal language common in
professional and academic settings, and casual language in
informal situations. Understanding formality levels aids
individuals in adapting their language to match social
expectations in different circumstances.
DEFINITION

Language can convey objective information of a

reference; and it can also express someone's feeling
(Holmes, 2001: 10). In referential scale, there are high
information content and low information content. In
affective scale, there are low affective content and high
affective content.
In sociolinguistics, the referential scale measures information
content, with high content being detailed and low content being
vague. The affective scale assesses emotional content, with high
content indicating strong emotions and low content indicating
little to no emotion. Different language uses correspond to these
scales, such as detailed discussions with colleagues having high
referential content, and expressing strong emotions having high
affective content. Understanding these scales helps analyze the
informational and emotional aspects of language use.

SOSIAL DIALECTS
DEFINITION

A social dialect in sociolinguistics refers to a speech variety linked to

a particular social class or occupational group. Affiliations with
multiple social groups, including region, age, gender, and ethnicity,
complicate the determination of social stratification in language
variation. The language used is not solely defined by content but also
reflects the speaker's identity across diverse social contexts.
EXAMPLE : Healthcare
Professionals' Social Dialect

Healthcare professionals exhibit a social

dialect characterized by technical jargon
among colleagues. This language reflects their
shared professional identity. However, when
communicating with patients, they switch to a
different linguistic style, showcasing how
social dialects adapt based on the speaker's
identity in varied social situations.
