Organic Chemistry

• is the study of the structure, properties,

composition, reactions, and preparation of
carbon-containing compounds. Most organic
compounds contain carbon and hydrogen, but
they may also include any number of other
elements (e.g., nitrogen, oxygen, halogens,
phosphorus, silicon, sulfur).
Molecule
• The smallest particle of a substance that has all of the physical and
chemical properties of that substance. Molecules are made up of one
or more atoms.
Hydrocarbons
• The term hydrocarbon refers to an organic
chemical compound that is composed
exclusively of hydrogen and carbon atoms.
Hydrocarbons are naturally-occurring and
form the basis of crude oil, natural gas, coal,
and other important energy sources.
Functional Group
• a group of atoms that influence the behavior of a hydrocarbon.
