UNDEFINED

TERMS IN
GEOMETRY
GEOMETRY
Study of different types of shapes, figures,
and sizes in Math or in real life.
In geometry, we learn about different
angles, transformations and similarities in
the figures.
From GREEK word “geo” means EARTH, and
“metron” means MEASURE.
Why undefined terms?
They are the simplest
necessities required in
geometry. Without parameters
they exist infinitely.
POINT

LINE
PLANE
POINT
A position in space. It has only
location but no dimension, height,
length, width and thickness.
Does not occupy an area.
Named using a capital LETTER
and it can be modelled by a dot.
POINT

Some common examples are: a star in the sky, the

tip of a compass, the sharpened end of a pencil, the
pointed end of a needle, starting point of a race,
corner of a bond paper, and the tip of the scissor.
LINE
A straight, continuous arrangement of infinitely
many points.
Its length is infinite. It extends infinitely in two
directions.
It has no thickness.
It is named by a lower case script letter or by
any two points on a line (TWO CAPITAL LETTERS)
LINE
PLANE
A flat surface that extends infinitely along its length
and width.
It is like “infinite sheet of paper”. It has length and
width but no thickness.
It is named by a single script “CAPITAL LETTER” or
by any three points in the plane which are not on
the same line.
At least three noncollinear points determine a
plane.
