Most people watch a film or a movie
because it is a form of entertainment for
them. It is considered a part of someone’s
lifestyle, and an opportunity to bond with

MANIPULATION
MANIPULATE
Manipulate means “to be in control.”
When you manipulate something or
someone, you perform it in a skillful
way to meet your purpose and achieve
what you want. Although to
manipulate may seem being in control
to create order, it is actually done
unfairly as the control only favors one
side.
Media Manipulation
It pertains to the strategy used by
advertising or marketing firms to
manipulate information in favor of a client
whose product or service is at stake.

Media manipulation can shape everything

you read, hear, and watch by exploiting
the viewers’ interests and deceiving their
perception of reality.
TYPES / EXAMPLES
OF MANIPULATIVE
INFORMATION

The following are examples of

media manipulation.
1. Consumer confusion
Consumer: “Both brands look okay. But
which product should I buy so I can
save more?”

-be creative with the packaging (products

of the same kind)
-offer a promo to attract the consumers
(Buy One, Take One / On Sale)
2. Crowd manipulation
-an advertising firm can manipulate the
public by making them believe that there
is a great demand for the product
-hire random people who would attest on
the efficacy of the product
-can release false survey results or
testimonies to convince the consumers
that the product is beneficial to everybody
3. Propaganda
-release a commercial paid by a political
candidate to destroy the image of a rival
politician
-revealing a candidate’s hidden wealth
-to gloss over the candidate’s image even if
the candidate is undesirable
4. Gatekeeping
-The public does not get the full
information about a certain issue –
(information is filtered).
-At times, it is done for protection and
security reasons – (terrorist attack or
personal reasons).
5. Celebrity endorsements
-The public can be influenced to patronize
a product endorsed by a public icon, or
someone popular or well-respected,
because these endorsements create an
impression that a product is of good
quality.
6. Hoax
-It is a form of media manipulation because
it deceives the public.

For example, a product claims to be

an effective cure for cancer because
of the natural enzymes found in the
product, but in reality, there is no
therapeutic claim for the product.
7. Psychological manipulation

-to influence and affect the public’s

beliefs, emotions, motives, and
reasoning
8. Fearmongering

-This is also known as

“scaremongering”.
-uses fear to influence people’s
opinion and action
Advantages of Manipulative Information

It boosts the image of a person or

product.
It filters the information to be
disseminated to the public.
It provides a sense of control and
order when it comes to the kind of
information to be shared.
Limitations of Manipulative Information

It can be biased and subjective to

protect a person’s image.
It distorts the facts and covers up
sensitive issues.
It hides the truth that the public
has to know.
