Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able
to:
 Recall the definition of permutation,
distinguishable permutation, circular
permutation, combination and the differences
of permutation from combination of n objects
taken r at a time.
Permutation
Refers to the different possible
arrangements of a set of objects.
The number of permutations of n
objects taken r at a time is
Distinguishable Permutation
refers to the permutation of a set
where some of them are alike. Number
of the permutations of n objects where
a objects are alike, b objects are alike,
c objects are alike, and so forth, is:
Circular Permutation
refers to the arrangement of objects in
a circular manner. Where, the number
of permutations of n elements in a
circle is (n−1)!
P= (n-1)!
And in special problems like bracelets
and necklaces that can flip over we
can use:
P= (n-1)!/2
Combination
is the number of ways of selecting
from a set when the order is not
important. The combination of n
object taken r at a time is given
by:
A c t i v i t y Ti m e !
Activity 1: Let’s figure it out!
Solve the following problems and identify if
permutation or combination.
1. In how many ways you and your 6 friends can sit
on a circular table?
2. A box contains 7 different marbles. In how many
ways can you select 5 marbles for you to play with
your younger sibling?
3. In a gathering, the host makes sure that each
guest shakes hands with everyone else. If there are
10 guests, how many handshakes will be done?

Activity 2:
Solve the following problems and identify if permutation or combination.

1. Carlo John bought three vanilla ice cream, two chocolate ice cream,
four strawberry ice cream, and five butterscotch ice cream for 14
children. In how many ways can he distribute the ice cream among
the children?
2. In how many ways can 5 students be chosen from a class of 40 for a
seminar?
a. If there is no restriction.
b. If Rachelle and Lovely is not allowed to go to the seminar.

3. There are 4 white T-shirts and 3 yellow T-shirts on the cabinet. A

white T-shirt should be placed on the left side of the cabinet and yellow
T-shirt on the right side of the bookshelf. How many ways are there to
arrange the books?
