FORMATION

OF
COVALENT
BOND
WHAT IS COVALENT
BOND ?
A COVALENT BOND IS A TYPE OF CHEMICAL BOND
THAT INVOLVES THE SHARING OF ELECTRON
PAIRS BETWEEN ATOMS. THE BINDING ARISES
FROM THE ELECTROSTATIC ATTRACTION OF THEIR
NUCLEI FOR THE ELECTRONS. IT IS RESPONSIBLE
FOR HOLDING THE ATOMS TOGETHER.

THEY ARE ALSO KNOWN AS MOLECULAR BONDS

HOW ARE
COVALENT
BOND
FORMED ?
A COVALENT BOND IS FORMED WHEN
THE ELECTRONEGATIVITY
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO
ATOMS IS TOO SMALL (<2) FOR
ELECTRON TRANSFER.
ELECTRONEGATIVITY IS THE ABILITY
OF AN ATOM TO DRAW ELECTRONS TO
ITSELF.
TYPES OF BOND

SINGLE BOND

Single bond is a chemical bond between two atoms involving

two valence electrons. That is, the atoms share one pair of
electrons where the bond forms.
DOUBLE BOND

Double bond is a covalent bond between two atoms

involving four bonding electrons as opposed to two in a
single bond. Double bonds occur most commonly between
two carbon atoms
TRIPLE BOND

Triple bond is a chemical bond between two atoms

involving six bonding electrons instead of the usual two
in a covalent single bond.
Polar bond is a covalent bond between two atoms
where the electrons forming the bond are
unequally distributed.

Nonpolar covalent bonds are a type of bond that

occurs when two atoms share a pair of electrons
with each other

A coordinate covalent bond, also known as a dative bond,

dipolar bond, or coordinate bond is a kind of two-center, two-
electron covalent bond in which the two electrons derive from
the same atom.
