defined results
ONCTIUUNOS
CONTINUOUS

the skd of all possible outcomes of an
experiment
Learning Objectives
Illustrates random variable (discrete and continuous).

Distinguishes between discrete and continuous random variable.

Finds possible values of random variable.

RANDOM VARIABLE

A random variable may be viewed as a way to map

outcomes of statistical experiment determine by chance
into a number.
• It is set of whole elements are the numbers assigned to
the outcomes of an experiment.
• Denoted by a capital letter usually X.
RANDOM VARIABLE

in some experiments such as:

• tossing a coin two times
• rolling a dice twice
• drawing two balls in a box
RANDOM VARIABLE

EXAMPLE 1. Suppose a coin tossed twice. Let X be the

random variable representing the number of heads that
occur. Find the values of the random variable. What is the
probability that you will get one head.
TWO TYPES OF RANDOM
VARIABLE
DISCRETE RANDOM CONTINUOUS RANDOM
VARIABLE VARIABLE

Its values are obtained through counting its values are obtained through
measurement
Examples:
 number of rotten bananas in a bunch of Examples:
bananas,  growth of tomato seedlings per week,
 number of honor students in a class, and  time needed to finish an exam, and
 number of tiles needed to cover a floor.  weight of pigs after 3 months
TWO TYPES OF RANDOM
VARIABLE
DISCRETE RANDOM CONTINUOUS RANDOM
VARIABLE VARIABLE
TWO TYPES OF RANDOM
VARIABLE
DISCRETE RANDOM CONTINUOUS RANDOM
VARIABLE VARIABLE

There are infinite elements in the sample

space wherein each sample are so closely
The sample space is finite (can be counted)
packed such that infinite number of elements
because each sample has a space between them
can fit throughout the sample space
Application
Classify the following random variables as DISCRETE or
CONTINUOUS.
1. Length of a cell phone charger 9. Distance between two barangays
2. Number of gadgets in a household 10. Total area of a rice field
3. Count of words encoded per minute 11. Growth of a child per year
4. Amount of water consumed per day 12.Temperature needed to bake bread _
5. Sum of burgers sold in a day 13.Number of babies born per day
6. Amount of time needed to boil a liquid 14.Yearly death due to cancer
7. Number of channels in a cable TV 15. Number of mistakes in a test
