How Unilever uses AI in their Recruitment
Process
 Unilever used Artificial Intelligence(Al) and Machine Learning to streamline this
process and make it better and more cost effective
 They partnered with two companies Pymetrics and HireVue to make this a better
process
What is Pymetrics?
 Pymetrics is a soft skills platform redefining hiring and talent
management – using data-driven behavioral insights and audited AI to
create a more efficient, effective, and fair hiring process across the talent
lifecycle.
 First, they are asked to play a selection of games that test their aptitude,
logic, and reasoning, and appetite for risk.
 Machine learning algorithms are then used to assess their suitability for
whatever role they have applied for, by matching their profiles against
those of previously successful employees.
Pymetrics
 The second stage of the process involves submitting a video interview
 Again, the assessor is not a human being but a machine learning
algorithm
 The algorithm examines the videos of candidates who answering
questions for around 30 minutes, and through a mixture of natural
language processing and body language analysis, determines who is
likely to be a good fit
What is HireVue?
 It is an enterprise video interviewing technology vendor that allows recruiters and
hiring managers to screen candidates and conduct live interviews over the Internet
 HireVue provides standardized, remote interview process
 They send you a series of questions that you'll answer via video, with a predetermined
amount of time to record and submit each answer.
 HireVue then ranks your video interview by the words you spoke when answering the
questions
Result Unilever got
 This has helped Unilever to cut about 70,000 hours of interviewing time and
application processing
 In terms of cost, Unilever saves 1 million dollars

 HireQuotient  The Predictive Index
 TestGorilla  Breezy HR
 iMocha  SparkHire
 Vervoe  Xobin
 Mercer Mettl  Qualified
 HackerEarth  HackerRank
 eSkill  HiPeople
Advantages of these platforms
 This takes out a lot of biases because these games are completely unbiased.
 The video interviews are completely unbiased
 It gives every individual applicant some feedback so when they assess
these are things that you have done well these are the things that did not
come across in your interview and therefore these are the reasons you were
not selected
 So it gives a much better experience to each applicant that apply to jobs
 Also, applicant can learn from feedback and can improve and then become
get a good job
The challenges of applying AI in recruiting

 AI requires a lot of data: AI requires a lot of data to learn how to accurately mimic
human intelligence
For example, AI that uses machine learning needs a lot of data to learn how to screen
resumes as accurately as a human recruiter
 AI can learn human biases: AI for recruiting promises to reduce unconscious bias
by ignoring information such as a candidate’s age, gender, and race. However, AI
is trained to find patterns in previous behavior
That means that any human bias that may already be in your recruiting process – even if
it’s unconscious – could be learned by AI if developed without due diligence
