PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL
[PRA]
Appraisal – the finding out of information about
problems, needs, and potential in a village . It is
the first stage in any project .
Participatory – Means that people are involved in
the process – A “bottom-up” approach that
requires good communication skills and
attitude of project staff .
Rural – The techniques can be used in any
situation, urban or rural, with both literate and
illiterate people .
PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL
Participatory rural appraisal (PRA) is an approach used by
non- governmental organizations (NGOs) and other agencies
involved in international development. The approach aims to
incorporate the knowledge and opinions of rural people in the
planning and management of development projects and program.
PRA tools such as :
• Direct observation
• Do it yourself activities
• Participatory mapping and modelling
• Transect Walks
• Daily activity profiles
• Semi structured interviews
• Educational seminars and get-togethers .
DIRECT OBSERVATION
Direct observation of the farming practises is the most effective and best way
of learning and knowing the current condition of the village, farm and the
farmer

KITCHEN GARDEN
My farmer manages a kitchen garden
where he grows :-
• Brinjal
• Tomato
• Chillies
• Cauliflower
• Potato
• Cabbage
• Carrot
• Onion
• Coriander
CROP CULTIVATED

My Farmer grows wheat as the main Rabi crop in all of his land
of 7 acres . He chose two varities of wheat depending upon the
use that it serves and they are as follows :-
1. Annapurna or HI-1544@85 Kg/acre.
2. Malwa Shakti or HI-8498 @1 quintal/acre ( for making Rawa
etc).
The sowing had already taken place before we had started the
RAWE Program. A Seed drill was used for sowing keeing the
depth at 1-2 inch and sowing 1 acre/hour. Before sowing field
was irrigated and this is called as “ PALEWA” in local language
that serves as a mean to soften the soil
IRRIGATION
The irrigation method used by farmer was FIRB
(Furrow Irrigation Raised Bed ) method. It can
account to about 25-30% conservation of water as
well as it also allows for a easy operation of manual
or hand weeding that in turn reduces the money
spent on herbicides

WEEDS
A weed is a plant considered undesirable in a
particular situation, "a plant in the wrong place".
Examples commonly are plants unwanted in
human-controlled settings, such as farm
fields, gardens, lawns, and parks.

Some common weeds are :-

1.Gajar ghaas (Parthenium hysterophorus )

2. Wild oats ( Avena fatua )
3. Sarson (Brassica campestris )
4. Bathua ( Chenopodium album )
CONTROL OF WEEDS
Weed control is important in agriculture.
Methods include hand cultivation with
hoes, powered cultivation with
cultivators, smothering with mulch,
lethal wilting with high heat, burning,
and chemical control with herbicides
(weed killers).
BROAD LEAF Beamar -58

INSECTS
Insects are responsible for two major kinds of damage to grow
crops.
First is direct injury done to the plant by the feeding insect, which
eats leaves or burrows in stems, fruit, or roots.
The second type is indirect damage in which the insect itself
does little or no harm but transmits a bacterial, viral, or fungal
infection into a crop.
